P296中一道关于计算 interquartile range的题目，原题如下：
2. The numbers of passengers on 9 airline flights were 22, 33, 21, 28, 22, 31, 44,
50, and 19. The standard deviation of these 9 numbers is approximately
equal to 10.2
(b) If each flight had had 3 times as many passengers, what would have been
the mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, and standard
deviation of the nine numbers?
这个 interquartile range我觉得怎么应该是Q3-Q1=33-22=11呢？
这一系列数字19、21、22、22、28、31、33、44、50难道Q3和Q1不是分别为33、22吗？

Q1的位置 (n+1)/4 =(9+1)/4=2.5=3
Q2的位置 (n+1) /2=(9+1)/2=5
Q3的位置 3(n+1)/4=3(9+1)/4=7.5=8
Q1=22
Q2=28
Q3=33

注意是四个相对等分的数组

19、21、22、22、28、31、33、44、50

这样算楼主的这道题目，按照Math Review中要求的情况，应该这样做：1.先找出M(median)，此题中的M是28
2.找出Q1和Q3

楼主在算Q1和Q3的时候，所用方法与math review的不一致。

其实关键就是要不要把M也算作是前半部或后半部中的一个数，如果把它算作是的话，那么Q1和Q3分别就是22和33了。
但是你发现这样做的话，达不到divide the data into roughly equal groups这个要求了。
19、21、22、22、28、31、33、44、50

所以，按照Math Review的要求的话，把28刨除，然后算19,21,22,22四个数的中值，得到Q1= 21.5; 同理Q3 = 38.5。
interquatile = Q3-Q1=17
这个时候Q1,M,和Q3才把这组数分成了4个等分
19、21、（21.5）、22、22、28、31、33、（38.5）、44、50




这也就是为什么Review上给的答案是17的原因。

谢谢你的解答，math review中的例子是偶数个数据，得出的中数可以刨除，对于奇数个的情况，中数就必然和其中一个相同，再计算下一组数据的中数时，每一个小组的数据包括哪些就又回到你说的要不要刨除28的问题上了，anyway,谢谢你的解答，我再找其他资料看看这个问题的解释~

刚又看了一下math review，觉得OG上对Q1、Q3的界定本身就存在争议“there are various rules to determine the exact values of and and Q1、Q 3，some statisticians use different rules,”所以，目前看来ETS是按照刨除Q2的方法计算的。
