In the past two hundred years, the scienceand technology has revolved people's life, making live a healthier and convenientlife into possible. Among those findings and advances in science andtechnology, the majority were funded by the government. And the supports fromthe states are increasingly growing recently. People's attitudes towardsfunding on all scientific researches vary. Some, from the pragmatism aspect, suggest that the government should spend more money on researches which havemore practical uses. Another group of tax payer states that it is necessary tofund on all scientific researches, regardless of their practical uses. As ascientific student, I cannot agree with the later view any more. I willillustrate my points as follows.
First of all, there is no scientificresearch totally useless. Human beings have evolved for thousands of years. Andwhat pushes beings and our society to improve is the researches made byscientists or researchers. It is the numerous researchers' works that build thementions, produce the juicy fruit and moves the mobiles. Now we all agree thatthose inventions or findings I mentioned above are of great meaning; while atthat time, those works were regarded as a waste of time and money. We claimsome researches that are of no practical use because we do not have a big viewand do cannot evenly estimate its value in the future.
Take the hybrid rice for example. Hybridrice in China means much more than a kind of results of technology. It savesmillions of people's life in China. Back to my grandpa's childhood, there arevery few people can enjoy a nice meal. Hardly can they get rid of thestarvation, because of the limited rice that the limited land can produce.Professor Yuan, an agriculturist in China, busy much time on hybriding domesticrice with their relatives, found one kind
of his works produces much higher amount of rice than others. Thefascinating rice was called "the super rice", which feed the billionpeople now. If the government did not paid professor Yuan for his rice, the bigcountry may still suffers from starvation. From this instance, it is clear thatthe once useless research may bring people about some unexpected surprises; andthanks to those surprises, the society can keep its rate of developing for somany years.
Moreover, in my opinion, doing research isnot merely about improving the society; it is also a pattern to fulfillpeople's interests about the incredible nature. When talking about the intentof scientists who spend their whole life digging the answers from the nature, the most common reply is that "I was just curious about this." That'swhy it is also said that it's the curiosity pushes the humans to walk, to thinkand to thrive. Newton's curiosity about why apples fall down to the earth notto the moon drives humans' exploration to the universe comes into true. It alsosent the satellites into space, started the lineless communication and made ourworld becoming smaller.
To sum up, people should draw a rationalconclusion about all the researches, no matter whether they have uses or not atthe moment. Nobody can be sure that the futures of the promising invents arebright; while others will stay in the dark. |
