Dear Sir/Ms,
My name is ____. My registration number is ______. I took the TOEFL iBT test in the following test center this morning (Sun 16/10). I would like to report an incident that has severely interrupted me during the test and has tremendously influenced my performance.
RM 501 HKEA SAN PO KONG SUB-OFFICE, #17 TSUEK LUK STREET, SAN PO KONG, KOWLOON
During my second task of the speaking section, while I was already responding to the question and the system had already begun to record my response, a test monitor suddenly interrupted me by standing right next to me and calling out loud to let me keep my voice down. I was totally shocked and as a result, stopped my response and had to reply her in Cantonese while the recorder was still running. When I turned back to continue speaking, about 10 seconds of the total 45 seconds has elapsed. But I could still see and feel the invigilator standing right by my side while I tried hard to get my focus back and finish the task.
I tried my best to speed up my speaking pace during the very task and finished my answer. However I am afraid marks will be deducted because of the fact that there were 10 seconds of silence in which I also used another language during the response. Not to mention 10 seconds out of 45 is not available so I could not talk about the topics with a better structure and with detailed examples.
After the incident, I was extremely upset and pissed. I am sure it had a negative impact on my later performance even though I tried my best to finish the whole test as well as I could under the circumstance.
I understand that it is the monitor's job to keep the order of the test room. However, this is the speaking session. I was one of the last takers to enter the test room, so by the time I began my section, everybody has already spoken loudly. I did not find my voice especially loud in comparison to others. In fact I was heavily affected by the others' voice in the first speaking task. But I do believe this is the nature of the test: you should spell out your ideas and responses confidently. And whatever the situation was at the time, it was highly inappropriate and unprofessional for the monitor to interrupt me when I am recording my response. Had she even a little knowledge about the process of the test, she should understand what she did would severely hurt a test taker's performance, and even his future.
I worked very hard for this test, especially for the speaking section, as the score of this section is specially required by the graduate school I am applying for this year (higher than 26). I have taken the test three years ago. Everything went well, and I got a satisfying score of 108, with only the speaking session a little low (23). This is why I am so angry and worried. In spite of all my preparation, the school will disqualify me due to a low score.
I sincerely hope that ETS will look into this incident carefully, with reference to the recording of my response and camera taping in the test room. I wish the evaluation of my response in the second speaking task would take the situation into consideration; or hopefully another test could be arranged in another test center in near future, as the application deadline in December is approaching. As a linguistic major, I have tremendous respect for what ETS and TOEFL has done for language testing. However, what happened today is unfortunate, for both ETS and me. |
