Contradicting to the three advantages of fuel-cell engines over internal combustion engines mentioned in the passage, the lecturer contends that it may be too optimistic for  the hydrogen fuel with the reasons as follows.

To begin with, it is true that petroleum is not infinite. However, the procedures to obtain the fuel-cell energy are not as convenient as the passage claims. The  hydrogen needs to keep in a pure liquid state and it is difficult to produce and store them without the advanced cooling technology. In this way, the utility of the fuel-cell engines are probably not so attractive due to the difficulty of obtaining and conserving them.

Furthermore, the carbon dioxide produced from oil burning, admittedly, will pollute the environment. Nonetheless, during the manufacturing  of fuel-cell engines, oil and coal have to be burned, which will also do harm to the surroundings. Therefore, fuel-cell engines are less likely to compete over internal combustion engines for the quality of environmentally  friendly.

Finally, according to the lecturer, the statement that the fuel-cell powered car requires less money and work efficiently is not so convincing, since a rare and expensive medal  has to been used to cause the efficiency. Hence, there is no doubt that the cost of fuel-cell energy will not as cheap as the passage asserts.

With further evidences and reasoning, the passage is seriously attacked by the lecturer.

20100313 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People can learn more from watching television than reading books.

In the world of information exploitation, the way to receive more information is much more critical than before. For children, they view the television as an interesting friend which will bring them a lot of information with vivid pictures and movements, while books are so boring that they prefer to take a nap. As for me, an adult busy with my daily work, reading books benefits me a lot due to its convenience, details and imagination it provides to me.
To begin with, the most obvious advantage of books is that they are easy to take with. When I take the subway to my work each day, watching TV to learn English is not feasible, but books are available at any time I need. Because its convenience, I have insistence to finish the reading. Meanwhile, since I am able to learn from the television only after my whole busy working at home, it may be impossible for me to have such a mood or state to make a progress any more.
Furthermore, sometimes, I believe that books could offer more details over television so that the receivers can master information solidly. I conclude this fact according to my own experience recently. I found one of my favorite movies, called 'Eat, Pray and Love' in the television, which caused me to buy a book of it online. After I finish reading the book, to my surprise, I conceived that the TV version has deleted a lot of exciting plots and emotional feelings of the characters which seemed so disappointed to me when I watched the movie again. Books with more descriptions and emotional activities, although they are expressed with still words, the readers can experience more fun and knowledge from them.
Last, the television programs block our imagination, which, in the long run, barriers us from learning more information. TV programs supply audiences diagramic movements and expressive meanings, limiting the space for our own consideration. In the end, we turn out to be uncreative and easily to follow others 'opinions. Reading books is another story. Not only can we have spaces within the lines to imagine the scenes, but also there exists enough time for us to consider and review. More times of thinking, more information will reward us. As to the television, pictures are impossible to wait for us unless at the cost of more information.
In a nutshell, I prefer the books over TV programs, since books are easier to carry with, presenting more information and details and leaving us spaces to imagine, contemplate and review.

Contradicting to the account for deceasing sea otters is the serious pollution, the lecturer contents that it is the predation that threats the animals' survival.
First, the passage claims that industrial chemical pollution causes the death of sea otters, but this fact is seriously attacked by the evidence that no dead bodies of sea otters have been found along the Alaskan coast which, on the contrary, strongly prove the consistence of predators for sea otters.
Furthermore, according to the lecturer, instead of being influenced by the polluted ecosystem, the whales are likely to be hunted by human beings, whose decrease leads to the diminishing number of orcases. In this way, the orcases have to hunt other small sea mammals, such as seals, sea lions or sea otters and so on. This view conflicts with the idea in the passage that pollution endangers the sea animals.
The final counterargument from the lecturer is that the uneven pattern of otter decline could be a better explanation of predation. Since the large size of the predators, the shallow and rocky areas are inaccessible for them, where the number of sea otters is stable, while in other places, to which predators can easily access, the population of otters decreases greatly. This theory differs from the opinion that uneven decline is due to pollution.
With further reasoning, the lecturer refutes with the passage.

The lecturer casts doubt on the assumption in the passage that the subject of the full-length portrait of a teenage girl is Jane Austen herself with the reasons as follows.

To begin with, the passage claims that because of the endorsement from Austen family, it is definitely true that the girl in the portrait is Jane. However, it was 1882,just after nearly 70  years from her death and the family members themselves might had not seen Jane. In this way, their permission to use the portrait as an illustration is not a convincing evidence to the conclusion that it is Jane herself that was painted.

Furthermore, the evidence of resemblance between two characters in these two drawings is challenged by the lecturer with an explanation that the teenager is likely to be her cousins or her relatives' children  in Jane's large family. Some experts have supported this idea that she is, perhaps one of her distant nieces of Jane Austen.
Finally, it seems to be assumptive to confirm the conclusion merely relying on the correspondence of Ozias Humphrey's style. As a matter of fact, as the lecturer says, the canvas of this portrait was only sold by William, but he did not sell this kind of canvas in London until he was twenty-seven years old, when Jane was not a teenager any more. There are chances that Jane Austen was elder than the teenager in the portrait.

With further reasoning and evidences, the passage is seriously attacked by the lecturer.
