Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Working at home using computers or telephones is better than working in the office

It seems to some people that working at home using computers or telephones is better than working in the office. But personally speaking, I prefer to work at office rather than at my own home.

Admittedly, working at home with computers and telephones do have some advantages. For example, instead of getting up in the early morning and throwing ourselves into the crowded bus, we may enjoy a much more flexible schedule and have a better rest. In addition, companies can save a lot of money since they don’t have to pay for the office buildings. Thus it seems that working at home will benefit everyone.

However, things are not so simple. There are several disadvantages for working at home using computers and telephones. First, unlike face to face talking with our colleagues at the same office, it may cost more time for us to communicate with each other through the internet and the information can be easily misunderstood. For example, last year I have to finish a report with one of my classmates and we decide to discuss the details on the internet. But it turned out that this is not a good idea. Without the help of facial expressions and the gestures, talking about a complicated idea is quite difficult. Finally we have to arrange a face to face appointment. Second, computers and telephones are not as reliable as a real people when you are dealing with some complicated work. For example, something may happen to your mailbox and you may lose a big contract due to the technical problems. Or your cellphone has run out of power, thus you cannot get an important phone call from your clients. Moreover, facing a computer at home every day can be very boring and it is not a healthy living way.

Working in the office has many benefits though it looks not very efficient. For example, we can develop a very good relationship with our colleagues in the office which is an important way for us to make friends in the society. Showing this, I’d like to talk about my parents’ marriage. They were colleagues in a little bank in my home town. According to my father’s words, he was attracted by my mother’s careful working attitude when they were doing a project together. I believe that the sweet story will not happen at all if my parents are working with stupid computers at their own homes. In addition, I think the daily office work is very important in our social life. We can build bonds with others during the work and we can share our happiness, sorrows and working experiences with each other in a friendly way instead of typing on a cold keyboard in our little lonely home.

To sum up, there are many unavoidable disadvantages when we work at home. More importantly, the advantages of working at home look pale when compared with the advantages of working in the office. Therefore I prefer to work in the office.

The reading passage claims that the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Contrarily, the professor in the lecture provides an example showing that there are a lot of disadvantages attacking a project with a team.

First, the reading passage believes that having a team should allow a wider range of knowledge and skills than a single individual does. But the professor points out that unlike what we have read in the passage, some team members may take a free ride and contribute nothing to the team at all. This may decrease the team's efficiency.

Second, reading passage argues that taking part in a group process can be very rewording for members of the team, but the professor doesn't agree with that point. He said that since the people who have a good idea and great insight on the project will not be named after the project and the big success will be treated as a team success, they will not feel happy.

Third, the reading passage thinks that a group may be more likely to make some risky yet creative decisions due to the spread of responsibility. But the lecture holds the view that deciding by group may also create some problems. First, making a decision in a group sometimes may cost very long time since people in the group can hardly reach an agreement. Second, having some influential people in the group, those who disagree with the influential ones, though their warnings may be right, will be ignored by other group members because any mistakes made by the group are typically seen as the mistakes of all the group members.
