225 "People often look for similarities, even between very different things, and even when it is unhelpful or harmful to do so. Instead, a thing should be considered on its own terms; we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else”
好难写,乱七八糟的,大家讨论讨论这个题目吧
The statement claims that it is unhelpful or even harmful for people tend to look for similarities franticly between studied objects, and we should treat them avoiding compare. In my view, I partly agree the statement in that it is not reasonable to excessively seek for similarities, however, the claimer goes too far by completely and arbitrarily overlooking the importance of compare.
To understand a thing or to prompt the development of a thing, simply and blindly drawing relationship of similarity or analogy is essentially harmful. The explanation for this lies in the fact that we are often led by such radical behaviors to be partial, prejudicial, shortsighted, and overweening. For example, the only character of evil is attributed to all the crimes, don’t thinking of their regret and probable goodness, most of us are more likely to abase them and treat them unfairly just during the time we play great emphasis on human rights. Now it comes to our basic education system, which oppressively impose the common principles on the children, with no respect to the individualized model to exert their own potential. At the high level, consider the economic development of a country, having no research on native concrete situations such as geography, climate, population, etc. but just transcribing foreign developing models and experiences can only bring about cool winter for the national economic.
Now the appealing point deserving our great attention is that denying false and reluctant similarities or analogies can not induce the falsehood that comparing should be cancelled. The following two reasons support my opinion. At the first place, we can not deny the reasonable and necessary similarities to be looked for. Actually, finding the sense of identification of origin, for instance, to great extent, is a process of mining various characters that identify with our ancestors. Personal value is also implemented in balancing whether or not what one has done has gone in direction same with societal one and self’s one. Secondly, to make a progress, compare with others aims at more than finding similarities existing within them. The essential difference concluded from the compare equally seems to be of vital significance. This is substantiated by the fact that frequently, differences in thoughts and theory follow great innovation. What is more, they are even marked as the signals of genius, although a little absolute, it at least indicates that we should not follow the so-called similarities in the cost of our own thoughts. Insofar this statement, the right attitude hold by us should be that it is reasonable and necessary too to look for the similarities, if impossible, our consideration should not be confined to internal terms, that is, compare is indispensable.
In conclusion, I agree that finding false similarities and drawing false analogies can be harmful. We can’t, however, isolate anything from the outside if we want to have a research on it or make a progress on it, or even just to recognize it. Being afraid of making out false similarities can not be excuse for abandoning comparing, which clears probably not only similarities but also differences within a series of things. Both of them are equally essential. |
