Last week, a study of one199 countries and territories confirmed what many people may have already noticed: people around the world are getting fatter. The study found that obesity has almost doubled since nineteen eighty’s. MXX EXXX at Imperial College London let the research team. He says the results show that obesity, high blood pressure and high cXXX are no longer just found in wealthy nations. These are now worldwide problems.
The study appeared in the ???. It shows that in two thousand and eight, almost 10% of men were obese. That was up for about five percent in nineteen eighty. At the same year, almost eight percent of women were obese. By two thousand and eight, the rate of obesity among women was almost fourteen percent. Obesity is commonly measured by body mass index called BMI. This is a measure of a person's weight in relation to height. A person with
a BMI of 25 to 29 considered overweight. The World Health Organization defines obesity as a body mass index of thirty or more. Pacific island nations have an average BMI of around 35, the highest in the world. But study found out the United States had the single highest average among wealthy countries. Men and women had an average BMI of over 28, New Zealand was the next. Japan had the lowest about 22 for women and 24 for men.
The report had some good news. However, about high blood pressure, the percentage of people with this major cause heart attacks and strokes has fallen since nineteen eighty. Dr. E improved testing the treatment in wealthy countries. He says a decrease in the use of salt and unhealthful fats probably also helped.
In the United States, new guidelines agent Americans to reduce salt, sugar and fatty meats and to eat more fish and whole grains. People are being urged to choose water over sugar drinks and to make fruits and vegetables a half of a meal. But whatever they eat Americans are being urged to follow the new advice from the government--eat less.

Last week, American space agency scientists announce that the discovery of possible earth like planets. The announcement came from newly released information from the Keple space based telescope. NASA scientists say the earth like planets are among one thousand and two hundred thirty five possible planets orbiting other stars that have been discovered so far. The researchers say that six new planets have been confirmed. But the Keple mission’s chief scientist William BXXXX says that eighty percent of the possible planets will probably be confirmed in the coming months and years. Before last week’s announcement, the total number of so-called xo-planets outside our solar system was just all five hundred. Mr. BXXX says that number is increased based on new information from the small part of the sky examined by the Keple telescope.
Keple looks at one four hundred is of the sky. If we had four hundred of this field of view, we would see four hundred times the number of candidates. Mr. BXXX notes they have found many possible planets in a small part of the sky. This suggests that there are countless planets orbit stars like our sun in our galaxy. He says that there must be millions of planets orbiting the stars that surround our sun.
Mr. BXXX says he was surprised to find 68 suspected planets about the size of the earth or smaller. 54 of the possible extra planets are in so called ‘habitable areas’ with moderate temperature and where liquid water could exist on the planet’s surface. He says some of the possible planets could even have smooth with liquid water. And he says five of the planet candidates are close to the size of Earth and orbit in the habitable area of their parent stars.

The Keple space telescope looks for planet by measuring tiny decreas in the brightness of stars when planets cross in front of them. Scientists stay extensive observations from earth based telescopes and needed to confirm the existence of the planets.
Yale University astronomer Debra Fisher says nonprofessional astronomers around the world are helping study new information about the possible planets. They are doing this on an internet website called planethunters.org. A spacecraft from the United States space agency has a date with commment T? on February the fourteenth. The Stardust next spacecraft is about to meet the comet on Valentine’s Day. This is the day many people will be going out on date with someone special in their lives. This meeting is almost meaningful because of comet T? has been visited before. And scientists are very interested in seeing how this solar system body has changed over the years.
The goal of the stardust next spacecraft is to gather scientific evidence on one of the solar system’s most changeable objects -- comets. Comets are balls of ice and rock that leave behind a trail of gas and dust in space as they approach the sun’s warming light. Sometimes observers see this as a comet’s tail which can be visible to the unaided eye stretching across the night sky. On February fourteenth, Stardust will approach to within two hundred kilometers of comet T??? The spacecraft will take 72 high quality pictures of the comets nuclear, which is about six kilometers across. But this is not the first time that T?? Has been observed closely. In two thousand five, another NASA spacecraft called Deep Impact paid a visit to T???. It released a small device or pro that crashed into the comet. This released huge amounts of material into space. The main Deep Impact spacecraft was able to send back information to scientists on earth. They found evidence of carbon based chemicals sand and, most importantly, water ice. Scientists will have a second look at comet T??? with Stardust. This double take is something new for comet experts.

加油加油~今天这篇很短。

Food prices are at their highest level since the United Nations food and agriculture Organization began keeping records in nineteen ninety, the causes including bad weather and growing demand. Some experts also blame the use of food crops to make fuel. But higher food prices are not always the result of limited supplies. Coffee prices have jumped almost fifty percent in six months. Prices have reached a 13year high. Yet growers expect their current crop to be most ten percent bigger than the last one.
JM SXXX is an American company known for its jelly and fruit spreads. But Smacker also owns Flogs, America’s top selling packaged coffee and it owns Dunkin’ Donuts, which sells coffee to wash down the donuts at its stores. On Tuesday, Smacker said it would raise the prices of its coffee products by an average of ten percent. It said the increase is driven by the higher price for coffee beans. Experts say coffee price are rising mainly because people are willing to pay more. Coffee sellers like Mark W??? say tastes are changing and more people want a good cup of coffee.
There’s no right or wrong answer with regard‘What’s a good cup of coffee’ A lot of it has to do with personal preference or taste.
Mark W??? owns the M.E. Swing Coffee Company in Alexandria Virginia near Washington. He says big coffee sellers like Starbucks help his business by building base of customers who want something better .
They’re seeking something that would be better than what they can buy at Starbucks. They’re seeking out smaller boutique, artisan, craft coffee roasters, which I consider us to be a boutique coffee roasting company. What we can do is sells better quality beans and supplies them at a fresher level because we’re smaller and we can cater to the smaller metro area. That helps us compete with bigger companies.
Yet Mr. .W??? thank those bigger companies like Starbucks for spreading the idea of coffee as an affordable luxury. The thinking that during hard times, people might not go on a trip but they might be willing to pay extra for good coffee. The company supplies restaurants and other business but also has a store in Washington near the White House. Customers pay thirteen dollars for less than half a kilogram of beans about double the price of other brands. Greater demand for high quality coffee has help to drive coffee prices higher. That includes greater demand among Brazilians. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of coffee. People in India are also drinking more coffee.

Some people will celebrate this Valentine's Day with someone they met on the internet through a dating site. But dating sites are not the only online places where people look for relationships.
This week on our program, we look at international marriage Brukers who help American men marry women from other countries. The internet is at the heart of the modern business with a long history. In America, the business of men sending for women from other countries began in the old west in the eighteen hundreds. There were many men living on the fronting these included the forty nines men who moved to California in eighteen forty nine to search for gold. But there were very few women willing to join them, as a result demand grew for women from other countries. They were called picture brides, better known today as mail order brides.
These days, women who advertise online for husbands are sometimes called e-mail order brides. But some people consider either term insulting. They say it suggests that the women are products that can be purchased. Finding an American husband, they say might provide an escape from a life of poverty or danger or loneliness. No one blames people for seeking a better life. But critics say this business sometimes seems like just another form of human traffic.
One study of agencies that list women seeking husbands has found there were around ten thousand mail order marriages a year. About four thousand of these involved men from the United States. Other husbands were Canadian, Australian, European and Japanese. The women were mostly Filipino or Russian. Although there were least of women from almost every country. But these marriage numbers may be low. They are from a report published in 1997 when the Internet was still young. Former Air Force officer David XXX met his Russian wife through an international marriage broker agen. He says he was so happy. he later bought the company. The business is called a V?? girl based in Louis???, Kentucky. Mr . K??? introduces Russian women to American men.
Why a few, very low percentage of ladies from Russia that are interested in finding a foreign husband is because of the problem with the Russian men. There’s a huge ??? of Russian men that are alcoholics and womanizers and several of the ladies have gone through that and they just don’t want that kind of man for their husband.Mr. K???'s company has been in business for eleven years. He says just five percent of the marriages have ended in divorce. the claim that is difficult to confirm. He points out that the Federal Bureau of Investigation must do a background check on a man before he can bring a woman to America.

T_T我是大懒虫。。。好多天没听了

The Ta??? Justice Center is a nonprofit group in the Washington area. It helps immigrant women who have been abused by American husbands. Heather Hayman is a lawyer there.
We try not to demonize or ??? the international marriage brokerage industry as a whole. We understand that there are some broker relationships out there that do end in happy marriages. But what we have unfortunately encountered is many situations where brokered marriage have not ended in happy relationships. And unfortunately when abusive situation do occur, the abuse can be horrific. Ms. Hayman says foreign wives often do not know there are laws that protect them, even if they are not citizens.
In our experience, foreign brides are just often particularly ??? to abuse and exploitation. For example, they’re dependent on their husbands for their legal immigration status. When they come over they may be isolated from their support network of family and friends. They might have limited English skills. And often what we found is they don’t know that domestic violence is a crime in this country or even where to seek help if they’re being abused.
There have been some studies of the practice of foreign women marrying American men. Some women use international marriage brokers. Others join American dating websites. An estimated sixty percent of the women are 25 or younger. Half of the men are over the age of 37. Researchers say power and control may be more important than love to men who seek a foreign wife. This may be true especially of men seeking a woman who advertises herself as traditional. The men often say American women want a career and are not happy with only being a wife and mother. One study found that most of the men are white, have some college education and are economically middle class. The majority are politically and socially conservative, most live in cities. Most have been married before and most want children.

In 2005, Congress passed a law that included what is known as IMBRA--the International Marriage Broker Registration Act. This legislation followed highly publicized cases of violence by American men against their foreign wives. IMBRA thus an American with a history of violent crimes from bringing someone to the United States to marry. If the American has a record of other crimes then the foreign suppose is supposed to receive a copy.
Heather Hayman at the T??? Justice Center says the law has some problems. But she says it has helped women who have been abused.

A shortwave radio might seem like an ancient technology these days. But for some people, it reminds their only link to the wide world. Years to Our World is an organization based in the United States, It provides shortwave radios to schools and communities in some of the poorest areas of the world. The radio is small about the size of a book, and self-powered. Users turn a crank. Waiting it for two minutes provides about forty minutes of listening time. years to our world is supported by private donations and partners including Eton, the company that makes the Eton ??? radios. Thomas WXXX started Ears to Our World in two thousand eight.
Our radios are go into people who have no other source of international news and information. It’s hard for them to learn new languages and be connected to the bigger world. In fact, in a lot of these communities, the feedback we get is before they had their radio, most of their news and information came world of month from other people. So this way they’re getting more accurate information. And teachers use this information in the classroom to enhance a student’s learning ability about the world around them.
Ears to Our World works with local organizations to get the radios to where they are needed most. Mr. WXXX says the radios are now in eleven communities, most of them in Africa. He says many of these communities are unable to get information any other way.
We take our radios to parts of the world that lack access to the Internet, to a national power grid of any sort. We’re talking about places maybe in South Sudan that are very remote. No one in the community or the village has power in their homes.
Thomas WXXX says information is the most important tool to improve the lives of poor people.
In this economy, information is sort of the lifeline for all of us to function and get along. Especially if you’re living in a place where you have no information. Information is your way out of poverty.
The self-powered radios are also useful in emergencies. Teachers in Haiti used them to get information after last year's earthquake.
Mr. WXXX says Ears to Our World has sent out about one thousand two hundred radios. More than half have gone to earthquake victims, mostly in Haiti. About five hundred have gone to individual teachers and schools. More recently, years to our world worked to bring the radios to children with vision problems in BXXX.

We know whales are mammals and that they evolved from land creatures. So the mystery is figuring out how they became ocean ???. Because until recently there was no fossil record of what we call /the missing link/ that is evidence of species that show the transition between land-dwelling mammals and today’s whales. Fortunately, some recent fossil discoveries have made the picture a little bit clearer. For example, a few years back in Pakistan, they found a bone of a wolf-like creature. It’s about 50 million years old. Scientists had seen this wolf-like creature before, but this bone was different. The ear area of the skull had characteristics seen only in aquatic mammals, specifically whales.
Then also in Pakistan they found a fossil of another creature, which we call AXXX That’s ???. The name AXXX comes from Latin, of course and means ‘walking whale that swims’. It clearly had four limbs that couldn’t have been used for walking. It also had long thin tail, typical of mammals, something we don’t seen today’s whales. But, it also had a long ??? structure. And that long ??? structure suggests that it was aquatic. And very recently in Egypt, they found a ??? of BXXX.

BXXX was a creature that we already know about for over a hundred year. And it has been linked to modern whales because of its long whale-like body. But this new fossil find showed a full set of leg bones, something we didn’t have before. The legs were too small to be useful. They weren’t even connected to its Power San and couldn’t have supported its weight. But it clearly shows BXXX an evolution from land creature. So that’s a giant step in the right direction. Even better, it established ??? as a clear link between the wolf like creature and BXXX. Now this discovery don’t completely solve the mystery. I mean ??? is a mammal that shows a sort of bridge between walking on land and swimming. But it also is very different from the whales who know today. So really we are working just a few pieces of a big puzzle. A related debate involved some recent DNA studies. Remember DNA is the genetic code for any organism. And when the DNA from two different species is similar, it suggests that those two species are related. And when we compared some whale DNA with DNA from some other species, we got quite a surprise. The DNA suggests that whales are descendants of the hippo ???.

OK. If I ask about the earliest thing you can remember. I bet for most of you, your earliest memory would be about age of three right? Well, that’s true for most adults. We cannot remember anything that happened before age of 3. And this phenomenon is so widespread and well-documented has a name. It is called child amnesia and it was the first document in 1893. As I said, this phenomenon refers to the adults who not being able to remember the childhood incidents. It’s not children trying to remember events from last month or last years. Of course you follow that if you can’t remember incidents as you are a child, you probably won’t remember as an adult. OK, so why is this? What is the reason from the child ??? Well, once a popular explanation was that child memories are always repressed and memories are disturbing so that is adults we keep them in berry ???. And so we can recall them and this is base on. Well it’s not base on the kind of self-research in the lab testing we want to talk about today.
So let’s put that explanation aside and concentrate on just two. OK? It could be that as children we do form memories of things prior to age of 3, but forget as we grew older, that’s one explanation. Another possibility is that children younger than 3 lack of ??? capacity of memory.

Well, finally in the 1980s, study was done. And this study show that very young children under age of 2 do have capacity for recall. Now if we children cannot talk, how was the recall tested? Well, that is a good question since the capacity for recall has always been linked with the ability to talk. So the researcher set up an experiment using imitation based texts. The adults use probable toys or other objects to demonstrate action that has 2 steps. The children were asked to imitate the steps immediately and then he again after lays off one or month. And even after delay, the children couldn’t call or replicate the action, the objects they used, and the steps involved and the order of the steps, even children young as 9 months. Now, test showed that there was a faster way of forgetting among the youngest children but most importantly it shows that the development of the recall did not depend on language development. And that was the importance finding. I guess I should add that the findings, don’t say there was no connection between the development of language and memory. There are some of evidence that are being able to talk about the event does lead to having a strong memory of that event. But that does not seem the real issue here. So, back to our question about the cause of the childhood amnesia, well, there is something called the rate of forgetting. And childhood amnesia may reflect high rate of forgetting, in other words, children under age of 3 do form memory and do so without language. But they forget the memories at a fast rate, probably faster than adults do. Researcher has set standards sort of unexpected rate of forgetting, but that expected rate was set based on the tests done on the adults. So what is the rate of forgetting for children under the age of 3? We expected to be high, but the tests disproved these really haven’t been done yet.

Ok, today we are going to continue our discussion of the parenting behaviors of birds. And we are going to start by talking about what are known as distraction displays. Now if you are a bird and there was predator around. What are you going to do? Well, for one thing you are going to try to attract as little attention as possible right? Because if the predator doesn’t know you are there, it is not going to try to eat you. But sometimes certain species of birds do the exact opposite when the predator approaches. They do their best to try to attract the attention of that predator. Now why would they do that? Well, they do that to draw the predator away from their nests, away from their eggs or their young birds. And the behaviors that the birds engage in to distract predators are called distraction displays. And there are a number of different kinds of distraction displays. Most of the time, when birds are engaging in distraction displace they are going to be pretending either that they have injury or that they’re ill or that they’re exhausted. You know something that’ll make the predator thinks, here is an easy meal. One pretty common distraction display was called the broken wing display. And in a broken wing display the bird spreads and drags the wings or its tail, and while it does that, it slowly moves away from the nests so it really looks like a bird with a broken wing. And these broken wing displays can be pretty convincing.

Another version of this kind of distraction display is where the birds create same impression of a mouse or some other small animals that running along the ground. A good example of that kind of display is created by a bird called the purple sandpiper. Now what’s the purple sandpiper does is when a predator approaches, it drags its wings but not to give it the impression that its wings are broken but to create the illusion that it has a second pair of legs. And then it raises its feathers, so it looks like it got a coat of fur. And then it runs along the ground swirling left and right you know like running around a little rocks and sticks. And as it goes along it makes a little squeezing noises. So from a distance it really looks and sounds like a little animal running along the ground trying to get away. Again to the predator, it looks like an easy meal. Now what’s interesting is the birds have different levels of performance of these distraction displays. They don’t give their top performance, their prime time performance every time. What they do is they save their best performances they’re most conspicuous and most risky displays for the time just before the baby birds become able to take care of themselves. And the time that way because that when that make the greatest investment in parenting their young. So they are not going to put their best performance just after they laid their eggs because they have to invest that much more time and energy in parenting yet. The top performance is going to come later. Now you have some birds that are quiet mature, are quite capable almost as soon as they hatch. In that case, the parent will put on the most conspicuous distractions displays just before the babies’ hatch because once the babies are hatch they can pretty much take care themselves, and then you have others birds that helpless when have hatch. In that case, the parents will save the best performance until just before the babies get their feathers.
