Issue 207 Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
Everybody lives in a society with its own culture. Many things consist of the culture, such as its typical languages, clothes and art, in which rituals and ceremonies play an important role. Even in modern society, if there are no rituals and ceremonies any more, societies or the people would have not clear definition of themselves.
In the first place, rituals and ceremonies help in defining and shaping the culture. When we want to understand a culture, we must do some studies on its rituals and ceremonies. It is because that through the rituals and ceremonies, we can know not only the characters of rituals and ceremonies themselves, but also what this culture admires and how they express their admiration, and furthermore can understand the culture deeper. For instance, now many people travel to the YunNan province in China in that there are several minorities and their diverse attractive cultures. What impressed the tourists most are the different rituals and ceremonies. When people think of the Dong nation, the ceremony of slashing water on each other to express best wishes will come to minds. Therefore, we can see that rituals and ceremonies play an important role in defining a culture.
In addition, since rituals and ceremonies are so significant and can represent for the characters of the culture, people cannot live without them. For example, I have read a book wrote by an Egyptian, who is the son of an Arab tribe. While he had been educated in Europe after he was 16 years old and even married a French girl, every summer he came back to the deserts, in which his tribe reside, to attend a ceremonies for giving thanks to their admiration. He said only by this, he could find who he was and gain peace in heart. Subsequently, people really need the rituals and ceremonies to define themselves.
Finally, the society should try to preserve them especially in modern society in that the rituals and ceremonies are so significant. Now with the pace of modernization and globalization, there is fewer and fewer space for the rituals and ceremonies of the culture. The society can help in financing to protect the rituals and ceremonies. In Beijing, there is a culture museum where there are different areas with different styles of the minority buildings. When it comes to a festival of a nation, the museum will hold the rituals and ceremonies. It is a quite wise behavior because this can not only help people know more about the culture, but also attract a lots of tourists.
In conclusion, due to the analysis and reasons mentioned above, which sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive, we may arrive at the conclusion that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture and the society and people, we should cherish and protect them. |
