Thomas Hardy’ s impulses as a writer, all of which he indulged in his novels, were numerous and divergent, and they did not always work together in harmony. Hardy was to some degree interested in exploring his characters’ psychologies, through impelled less by curiosity than by sympathy. Occasionally he felt the impulse to comedy (in all its detached coldness) as well as the impulse to farce, but he was more often inclined to see tragedy and record it. He was also inclined to literary realism in the several senses of that phrase. He wanted to describe ordinary human beings; he wanted to speculate on their dilemmas rationally (and, unfortunately, even schematically); and he wanted to record precisely the material universe. Finally, he wanted to be more than a realist. He wanted to transcend what he considered to be the banality of solely recording things exactly and to express as well his awareness of the occult and the strange.
In his novels these various impulses were sacrificed to each other inevitably and often. Inevitably, because Hardy did not care in the way that novelists such as Flaubert or James cared, and therefore took paths of least resistance. Thus, one impulse often surrendered to a fresher one and, unfortunately, instead of exacting a compromise, simply disappeared. A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give way abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower. In this instance, the new impulse was at least an energetic one, and thus its indulgence did not result in a relaxed style. But on other occasions Hardy abandoned a perilous, risky, and highly energizing impulse in favor of what was for him the fatally relaxing impulse to classify and schematize abstractly. When a relaxing impulse was indulged, the style—that sure index of an author’ s literary worth—was certain to become verbose. Hardy’ s weakness derived from his apparent inability to control the comings and goings of these divergent impulses and from his unwillingness to cultivate and sustain the energetic and risky ones. He submitted to first one and then another, and the spirit blew where it listed; hence the unevenness of any one of his novels. His most controlled novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, prominently exhibits two different but reconcilable impulses—a desire to be a realist-historian and a desire to be a psychologist of love—but the slight interlockings of plot are not enough to bind the two completely together. Thus even this book splits into two distinct parts.

18. The passage suggests that the author would be most likely to agree with which of the following statements about literary realism?

    (A) Literary realism is most concerned with the exploration of the internal lives of ordinary human beings.

    (B) The term "literary realism" is susceptible to more than a single definition.

    (C) Literary realism and an interest in psychology are likely to be at odds in a novelist's work.

    (D) "Literary realism" is the term most often used by critics in describing the method of Hardy's novels.

    (E) A propensity toward literary realism is a less interesting novelistic impulse than is an interest in the occult and the strange.

He was also inclined to literary realism in the several senses of that phrase.

A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give way abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower.

Thomas Hardy’ s impulses as a writer, all of which he indulged in his novels, were numerous and divergent, and they did not always work together in harmony. (第一句明显是topic sentence,全文其实就是说明了H人的impulse)Hardy was to some degree interested in exploring his characters’ psychologies, through impelled less by curiosity than by sympathy. (第二句是想说明推动H人探索人物心理的内因,同情心多于好奇)Occasionally he felt the impulse to comedy (in all its detached coldness) as well as the impulse to farce, but he was more often inclined to see tragedy and record it. He was also inclined to literary realism in the several senses of that phrase.(这两句是说H人感受。。。 He wanted to describe ordinary human beings; he wanted to speculate on their dilemmas rationally (and, unfortunately, even schematically); and he wanted to record precisely the material universe. Finally, he wanted to be more than a realist. He wanted to transcend what he considered to be the banality of solely recording things exactly and to express as well his awareness of the occult and the strange.(但这个划线部分就很明显是在具体说明 in the several senses of that phrase了吧,个人觉得可以看做是举例

In his novels these various impulses were sacrificed to each other inevitably and often.(这句可以看做是structure element,是说H人的各种impulse经常不可避免的互相牺牲,可以理解成互相做出让步吧。 Inevitably, because Hardy did not care in the way that novelists such as Flaubert or James cared, and therefore took paths of least resistance. (这句的话要注意F人和J人,H人的特点和F/J人不同,这里有可能出题的) Thus, one impulse often surrendered to a fresher one and, unfortunately, instead of exacting a compromise, simply disappeared. A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give way abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower. (这句话的具体分析在杨鹏的长难句那本书上第二句,杨鹏对这句话的评价很高,因为这不是一个完整的句子= =其实大概意思还是可以了解的,就算在考场不能完全读懂也没什么大问题,无非就是说一种欲望绝对不会唐突的给另一种欲望让路~~,这句话我觉得独到这个程度就差不多,不过要注意里面的强对比词never)In this instance, the new impulse was at least an energetic one, and thus its indulgence did not result in a relaxed style.(in this instance就指代上面那个变态句子,这句就进行了解释) But on other occasions Hardy abandoned a perilous, risky, and highly energizing impulse in favor of what was for him the fatally relaxing impulse to classify and schematize abstractly. (这句是说明H人的另一种情况,转折词but要注意,这说明前后两种情况不同)When a relaxing impulse was indulged, the style—that sure index of an author’ s literary worth—was certain to become verbose. In this instance和but on other....when这四句解释了H人的两种情况,也就是对第二个蓝色句子的具体阐述】Hardy’ s weakness derived from his apparent inability to control the comings and goings of these divergent impulses and from his unwillingness to cultivate and sustain the energetic and risky ones. (这句话解释了H人出现这种写作风格的原因有二)He submitted to first one and then another, and the spirit blew where it listed; hence the unevenness of any one of his novels. (H人的做法以及这样导致的后果)His most controlled novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, prominently exhibits two different but reconcilable impulses—a desire to be a realist-historian and a desire to be a psychologist of love—but the slight interlockings of plot are not enough to bind the two completely together. Thus even this book splits into two distinct parts.(这部分都是举例,是对前一句话的说明:就算是他最controlled novel也依然是unevenness,进一步阐释了H人的写作特点)

2. A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give away abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower.(5++)
句首省略了this is。
B、desire后跟着两个大的修饰成分,一个是to throw over reality a light,其中的a light 是被倒装到了over reality之后,正常应是throw a light over reality.
A give way to B,是A让位于B,而A be given way to B,则是A取代B。on the part of 之后的部分修饰后面的desire, what引导的从句现场阅读时可以看成一个名词。What从句中的不定式to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower中又有一个避免头重脚轻的倒装,正常语序应该是to record the structure and texture of a flower exactly and concretely。
