Should a nation require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college? I concede with the speaker that a same national curriculum in some situation has merit, nevertheless, consider the fact that in some other situations where educational resources are not equally distributed , I think this suggestion has shortcomings.
Admittedly, in a nation where educational resources are equally distributed, a same national curriculum can bring benefits. First of all, a same national curriculum will bring a national standard examination to measure students from everywhere. As students have same academic background, it's more justify to
measure students' academic potentials based on the result of the examinations. Besides, it's also good for students to help them adapt to different schools. Once they want to change their schools, they don't need to worry the differences between the
curriculum which may require extra effort and the differences between
the academic performance measurement.
However, if this policy carried out without noticing the imbalance development among different areas, it may create inequality of education. For those students study in rural areas where local educational institutions don't have sufficient teachers or facilities to carry out quality classes, when they participated in the examination, they would be in disadvantage places. After all, an equal national curriculum can not guarantee an equal distribution of educational resources thus undermines the equality of education.
What's more, a national curriculum may harm students' individual developments. Students have different futures, thus a national curriculum is impossible to satisfy every student's need. Furthermore, isn't it better to prepare a future farmer with knowledge on how to manage his farmer better rather than how to appreciate Shakespeare better? Isn't it better to prepare a future elementary teacher with more knowledge on how to teach rather than how to analysis complex physical problems? (Do you want to indicate that education should respect the individuals? You’d better express explicitly with other examples
)
In sum,
a national curriculum in a nation where students can receive equal educational resources may be a favorable suggestion. However, take the fact that many nations have imbalance distribution of educational resources and students have variable interests into account, maybe allowing schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer is a better suggestion.
