1 As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.
With the development of technology, people rely more and more on technology to solve various problems like communication, weather forecast and universe exploration. The dependence on technology leads to the worry that humans' ability of thinking independently might deteriorate or even lose. However, the worry over-emphasizes the roles of technology, while ignoring the fact that technology is only a tool for humans.
To begin with, technology has been so deeply incorporated with many aspects of humans' life that humans depend on technology more than ever to solve problems. Most of the countries have been industrialized or under the process of industrialization. People's lives have been changed inevitably by such process. Electricity, televisions, the Internet and so many other technology inventions are so closely related with people's life. One cannot imagine that how a world would be without such inventions. It seems that in many aspects of people’s life, technology is indispensable. In more complex situations, like forecasting weather and launching satellites, technology is more crucial. The era has passed that only manual computing and working were used. The reliance on technology has become an inevitable trend for humans.
Technology liberates humans from repetitive thinking, which might lead to humans' thinking inertia. When a calculator is available, one might rely on it to solve calculation problems but not solve them by oneself. It is reported that a system was developed to assist judges in deciding penalty. It shows humans inclination to rely on technology to solve complex problems. The development of artificial intelligence makes computers clever than before. The super computer Deep Blue produced by IBM once defeated World Chess Championship. The automatic control system of Japanese super express railway plays a key role in sustaining smooth running of trains. Theoretically, without inference of humans, the whole railway system might still be kept running. In more cases, it seems to be that more work has been finished by machines. People seem to be more powerless compared with machines. However, the change is only superficial and partial.
Many problems cannot be solved only through technology. Up to now, computers still cannot think independently like humans. Theory and technology of artificial intelligence are established through scientists' creative thinking. The automatic control system is developed by humans. In order to make the trains’ running more smooth, workers are still needed to adjust the system according to specific situations. Unless computers are intelligent enough that they have consciousness like humans, the independent thinking and final decision made by humans are still needed. Moreover, many complex social, economic and political problems can not only be solved through technology. For instance, wars and conflicts are originated from humans' greedy pursue for resources. During wars, who grasp the power of technology, who grasp the power of destroying enemies. Technology is like a two-edged sword that might be used by the evil or the justice. Technology is only one of the possible methods for humans to solve various problems.
To sum up, technology is created by humans. It cannot replace humans' independent thinking. With the development of human civilization, more and more complex problems are needed to be solved. Humans still have to think independently to solve these problems through comprehensive methods, including technological, political and ethical methods. |
