108.Critical judgment of work in any given field has little value unless it comes from someone who is an expert in that field.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
Critical judgment has a great relationship with not only scientists, politician, but also General people. When it comes to the value of people's critical judgment, there are always lots of disparate views held by various people in different fields. Does critical judgment have little value unless it comes from somebody who is an expert in that area? Admittedly, the critical judgment of an expert in that field has great value for other people. However, the critical judgment of an expert from other fields may also have some value for people in that field. Moreover, in some areas such as politics or economics, General people's critical judgment is very important.
First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that critical judgment of somebody who is an expert in that field has vital value. In some scientific fields such as pure mathematics and pure physics, the accomplishments of a scientist can only judge by experts in that field. For instance, for certification of Fermat Last Problem of Andrew Whiles, it needs experts in mathematics to verify whether it is true or not. Because it needs a great deal of knowledge in pure mathematics, experts in other areas or general people cannot know what it is, not even give critical judgment.(修改Because to approach the theorem it requires a great deal of knowledge in pure mathematics, experts from other backgrounds as well as ordinary people are unable to understand, not to mention giving any critical judgment of it.) And for general relativity of Albert Einstein, only a few people understand what it says.
Nevertheless, in some other occasions, we cannot neglect the vital role of experts from other areas. Due to explosive development in science and technology, large amounts of interdisciplines emerge recently, such as mathematical physics, financial mathematics and physical chemistry. People from different fields cooperate with each other to seek to solve problems in some areas. Critical judgment of experts in other fields may have vital value in these cases. John Nash, a mathematician who won the Nobel Prize of economics in 1994, applied mathematics to economics and propelled the development of economics.
What is more, in some specific fields, for instance, politics and economics, critical judgment of general people also has great value. In politics, the responses and suggestions of one policy from general people play an increasingly vital role in maintaining a country's political democracy and the stabilization of a nation. In commercial economy, a commodity is good or not due to the judgment of people who use it. Only when consumers had used it, could people judge whether it is good or proper for people. For a commodity, suggestions of consumers are more important than suggestions of people who design it. A design which is not agreed with General people's taste will be supplanted eventually.
From the analysis made above, I commit to the optimal approach that we need to seek a balance and take an all-sided consideration. In some scientific areas, critical judgment of an expert in that field has great value; in some other areas, critical judgment of experts from other fields may also have some value for people in that field; in politics and economics, General people's critical judgment is vital. |
