Nowadays, more and more television advertising has shown up whether it is toward men or women, children or adults. However, whether it is suitable to broadcast some television advertising directed toward young children has been generally discussed. From my point of view, I definitely disapprove of this kind of advertising and I will present three main reasons for my view.
The first reason that I want to elaborate upon is that television advertising of some food companies will encourage children to eat some junk food. Acceding to a recent report made by World Health Center, more than 67 percent of children today are overweight and 23 percent of them are so fat that they will probably die because of this. In fact, overweigh is a harmful disease that we should take very seriously, so we should not expose our children to this kind of television advertising to prevent them from developing that bat habit of eating too much junk food. In conclusion, for sake of children's health, television advertising toward them should be prohibited.
Secondly, since imitation is one of children's instincts, children will imitate whatever is broadcast in the television advertising even if that is very dangerous. These kinds of examples happen very often in our daily life. In a television advertising of a cartoon company, the main character, superman may be capable of flying which is absolutely impossible for human beings, and in the television advertising, the superman jump into the air from the skyscraper. What would our children do if they watch this action? They are likely to imitate this dangerous action. Imagine how terrible it would be if children stay at home alone, watching this television advertising and do the dangerous action. That would be a disaster for that family. So television advertising should not be allowed out of safety.
Finally, the purpose of television advertising is obviously to attract people to buy their products. It goes without saying that even many adults will be influenced by the television advertising and then buy some products that they actually do not need at all. For children, this influence will probably be stronger. Children at that age have not formed the ability to determine whether the products in the television advertising are worth owning. What they think is simply I do not have that, so I want one. Then, they will ask their parents to buy the products for them. If that family is wealthy enough, then that will not be a big deal. However, suppose that family is quite ordinary, and then parents will encounter with a dilemma. If they do buy the products for their children this time, children may ask for another one next time. If they do not satisfy their children's request, children will feel very depressed and then relationship between children and parents may deteriorate. The best solution to this dilemma is to ban the television advertising.
From what has been discussed above, we could safely draw the conclusion that television advertising directed toward young children should be banned, since that will keep children both healthy and safe and prevent some dilemma of family from happening. |
