What we call “non-mainstream ” today such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit had ever played a incontestably dominant role in human history, and their great influence have even reached far into contemporary world dominated by rationalism and scientism. While acknowledging this role of non-mainstream areas, we shouldn’t ignore the fact that with the extraordinary progress of modern science and technology, effects of non-mainstream areas imposed upon human life is rapidly fading away from the vision of human beings. And the more advanced science and technology, the more manifest this tendency!
(I really appreciate your viewpoint: with the ever increasing accumulation of science and knowledge, the non-mainstream areas are just facing a tendency towards fading, and along with the further development of modern science, we always have good reason to believe the fact that such area will eventually diminish itself from the history stage.)
Astrology, fortune-telling and many other nonscientific cultures go along with the undeveloped state of science and technology. ( a little vague) In the primitive age of human history, when there were no any idea of science or nationality, it were only these somewhat mysterious styled cultures that ancient people could resort to for the sake of eliminating or at least alleviating their confusion and anxiety over the miracles existing in nature. The innate curiosity of human also caused them to make all kinds of imaginative but not necessary scientific explanations about what they wondered and wanted. By this means, people’s needs for curiosity, consolation, as well as “rational” grounds for their behaviors were greatly satisfied. Certainly this is why these so-called non-mainstream areas thrived in the ancient age and had dominated human civilization for thousands of years.
However, while giving rise to the prosperity of these mysterious cultures, human perpetual needs for the unknown and the unsatisfied also inevitably lead to their degeneration or ever-accelerating retreat from human civilization, with the rapid progress of modern science and technology. In the nature of them, astrology, fortune-telling and other mysterious things, even in their heydays, can only partly satisfy people’ needs, impossibly providing human final or complete satisfaction, though which is just what human want. Therefore, it is not a surprise that science and technology gradually substituted for those mysterious areas, becoming the new mainstream of modern age, for (in) that they can better serve for human needs or desires, either mentally or materially. Moreover, these non-mainstream areas are now almost unanimously viewed as an inhibition or encumbrance to the progress of modern civilization by human elites.( The more serious is, the restriction such non-mainstream set upon some peoples that could hamper the promulgate of knowledge) Rationalism and scientism have been claimed as the paramount educational goal by all schools, colleges, universities and even kindergarten. As to astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit, it has been a fortune for them to survive to the 21st century confronted with such an overwhelming impact of modern science (somewhat awkward), and it can be expected that as time goes by, these non-mainstream areas will find the social atmosphere become harder and harder to continue their survival. (I recommend that the last sentence should be more concise)
Admittedly, the realm still exists that modern science and technology fail to address or attain, which spares more or less some space for non-mainstream areas in the modern age. Some traditional mysterious cultures are very popular in even several highly civilized regions such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, continually serving for consoling people’s mental disarrangements that are beyond of modern civilization (wrong expression! Beyond (the capacity of )modern civilization此外,难道说这些占卜,观星术真的能在一定程度上超越现代文明么,请赐教). But it must be pointed out that today’s role of non-mainstream ( better be replaced with the existing role, rather than today’s rule )areas is quite different from that of the past: people in the past resorted to them for truths or grounds while nowadays people simply for consolation or relaxation. No one is too naïve to entirely believe in what astrology or fortune-telling tells him/her in the current world. In Hong Kong and other places, for example, some non-mainstream traditions are even used as lucrative programs to captivate foreign tourists. So we can hardly say that they still play a important role in the modern society despite their ostensible popularity in certain places.
To sum up, regardless of their critical role in human life, astrology, fortune-telling and other non-mainstream areas are gradually fading away from the human civilization. And with the ever-increasing rate of scientific progress, their effect on human beings will becoming too trivial to notice. (647 words)
