Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.
When we talk about Bill Gates, his experience of dropping out of Harvard University is always mentioned. Therefore many people claim that attending class is unnecessary, while in my opinion, so particular is this example that we shouldn’t overgeneralize that his experience can be applied to everyone. According to me, I support that university students should be required to attend classes.
The first reason I want to mention is that many people tend to make themselves cozy if there is no discipline to regulate their behaviors. I’m a university student myself, so I can know from students around me that even if they don’t attend class, seldom will they use the time which is originally the time for class to do something meaningful. For example, more often than not, they skip classes mainly with the purpose of having a good sleep, playing computer games or dating. In a sense, easing the restriction that students should attend class compulsorily actually provides them with chance to goof off.
Additionally, if students are required to attend classes regularly, teachers will feel stronger responsibility since teaching and learning will seem more serious. Also, teachers will have more opportunities to know students’ strengthens and weaknesses more and deeper, which allows them to give students better guidance. Let’s imagine, if you always sit on the front row, ask questions when they cross your mind, and communicate with professors frequently about your puzzles and progress, is it possible that professors will have a better understanding of your academic performance and give you honest and comprehensive advice? The tie between professors and students will be tightened.
Moreover, though learning by ourselves is an indispensable ability that university students must have to develop, it’s sometimes low efficient. With tremendous amount of information available, in books or on the Internet, students will get overwhelmed and have to spend much time searching for the useful information, which is tiring and time-consuming. At this time, it’s the experienced professors who play an important role in giving students direction. Professor is to students what compass is to the explorer. It’s no denying that attending classes is one of the best and convenient way to talk to professors face to face, thus personally I think students should cherish this rare chance and they should be required to do so.
In a word, for most students, the benefits that attending classes optionally brings mean little when the reasons above are taken into consideration. Even if there is no discipline forcing us to obey the rule, we still shouldn’t ignore the significance of attending classes. |
