The table indicates the data about the systems of subway in London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.

According to the table, London is the city which launched the underground railway system the earliest in 1863 among these six cities. Followed by Paris in 1900 and the lasted one is reported to be Los Angeles in 2001.

When it comes to the kilometers of route, there is a tendency seems that, since 1863, the size and the extent of the subway systems became more and more smaller and shorter gradually(e.g. range from 394 km2 in London to 28 km2 in Los Angeles). Also, the decreasing number of passengers could be found in the table, with dramatically shrank from 1191 million people per year in 1900 to 50 million people per year in 2001.

Hence, we can safely draw the conclusion that, with the development of modern city, room is limited and the choice of transports is enlarged which contributes to the diminishment of underground railway systems’ size and falling number of passengers.
