6. 18 It is better to spend money on traveling and vacationthan to save money for the future.I agree with the statement.

I am not talking about those whohave a rich uncle. I am talking about myself-born in a small town, white-collarworker with a moderate payment, still living in a rent house with tworoommates, taking public transportation to work, being in a relationship butnot married.

People save their money mainlyfor three purposes- housing, wedding and for their kids’ education. It’s notbad, but I think spending money on travelling is a better idea. My reasons areas followed.

Travel brings me a lot of excitement.Every single place has their unique character. The night view of Hong Kong isreally beautiful, seafood in Japan is probably the most fresh in the world.Drinking a glass of wine in a small farm located near Paris would tastedefinitely different from drinking the same brand of wine in your localrestaurant. I lost 100 dollars in gambling in Las Vegas, and they gave me afree entrée to a buffet, which costs 80 dollars. All these experiences left meprecious memories that I could recall whenever I want throughout my entirelife. I think these memories value much more than owning a big house in thecity. Why don’t you just rent a house in the city, and then spend your holidaysin a resort near beach? Isn’t it much better?

In my country, it is quite commonthat people save money for wedding, because they treat wedding ceremony as areally important event. They would take wedding pictures for 2000 dollars, holda party in a 5 star hotel, and brides would ask for at least 1 carat diamondring. Well, it’s true that wedding is important. But I think the true meaningof wedding is to bond two separate persons together as a family. What isimportant for a family? Doubtlessly, love. In my opinion, compared to stupidwedding pictures and luxurious ring, a long journey would contribute more inbuilding love for new married couple. Hold a simple ceremony in a church withfamily and close friend, and then set off to Europe for one month-isn’t itromantic? The journey would definitely make you guys love each other more.

Talking about education, I thinktuition fees for college is the biggest load for parents. In China, it’s quitecommon that parents will cover the tuition fee for their kids. Well, I was anexception. I took three part time jobs to cover the expense during college. Itwas not that my parents didn’t pay for it; it was because I thought it wouldbenefit my further career. All those job experiences helped me to do a betterjob after I started to work. And what my parents did with the money saved on myeducation? You’re right; they traveled a couple of countries. Travelling wastheir life dream. They were used to save money to buy a big house. After buyingthe house, they started to save money for my college. I am grateful that I wasable to do something for my parents. I didn’t take their money.

I believe many people lovetravelling, but they would choose to save money for future, just in case. In myopinion, though, if you have money and time, just book a ticket and set off. Afterall, we don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, so man, enjoy your life,and think less about your future.

6.19 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: patience is usually not a good thing, we should take action at once.

I think it depends. Taking actionimmediately is highly appreciated in today’s high-tempo society; whilesometimes, patient is necessary to get a better result.

In many times, chances are givento those who arrive first. Last month, there wasa seminar in Canada which was closely related to our company’s business. I waslucky to see the announcement on my office website just after it was posted. Theannouncement said the company decided to give full-funding support to threeemployees. If I could attend the seminar, I could not only learn a lot, butalso could visit Canada, one of my dream countries. So I immediately filled outthe funding application table, and then sent it through email with my CVattached, as was requested in the announcement. I was on the bus going backhome from work, and I did those work with my laptop, because I thought thischance would disappear if I didn’t grab it. Then the next day I received a mailinforming that I was one of the three who got the funding. Time never waits.This experience taught me a lesson: if there’s a chance in front of you, don’thesitate, go and catch it.

Patience, though, is crucial insome occasions. Yesterday, I had dinner with my best friend. She was upsetbecause she broke up with her boyfriend Jim several days ago. I was quitesurprised, because they were together more than three years, and moreover, herboyfriend proposed to her one month ago. But what surprised more was the reasonwhy she dumped him: after proposal, my friend asked for time to consider aboutit.  Jim promised to give her time, butobviously he was not patient enough to wait for the answer. He gave her callalmost every day, and this put a lot of pressure on my friend. She told me thatif he gave her more time, she would marry him. But she was not ready when theboy asked for the answer repeatedly, so she said no. I felt really sorry aboutthe situation. If only the boy was a bit more patient, he would definitelymarry the girl he loves.

    It is hard to tell which one isbetter: being patient or taking action at once. It differs from situation tosituation. My suggestion is: don’t let the chance go, but never push it.

Some jobs can pay high salaries but require employees to leave their family and friends. Some jobs pay few salaries but allow employees staying with family and friend. Which job do you prefer? Why?
I will choose to stay close with family and friends.
Family always has the biggest priority whatever decision I make. I felt in this way mainly because my 2-year working experience in Hong Kong. It’s true that Hong Kong pays me much more than my local company, about three times as much. However, my life in Hong Kong was not at all happy. After a long day’s work, I took 1 hour’s subway to go home. Then I cooked dinner for myself, ate it sitting in a big round table designed for six people. I had nobody to talk with; nobody would care about me even though I was seriously ill. I could buy luxuries with my high-limit credit card, but every time when I was shopping in a big shopping mall, I couldn’t help my eyes glancing at the sweet couple coming out from Mc Donald, with their kids licking ice cream. Homesick drove me crazy. I missed the days in my hometown that after work, my husband would wait for me in front of my company, because our companies were so close, and then we walked home together. We laughed, argued, walked, and cooked, all together. That was the sweetest time that I’ve ever had. So, when the 2 years’ commitment with the Hong Kong’s company was over, I declined their offer for working there another 2 years. Because I finally realized that what I truly need was family, not money.
And actually, you will find that you would spend a lot of money if you live far away from home. Again, I learnt it when I was living in Hong Kong. I had to attend family gatherings: such as birthday party, Christmas event and New Year’s party. I didn’t want to miss these events because I wanted to make up my absence along the year. Every time I went back home, I would buy a lot of gifts for family members, which, I think if I was living with them, I would not do so. And as you know, airline tickets are quite expensive when there’s a festival. Last year, the roundtrip tickets during Christmas holiday cost my one month’s salary.  Money spent on phone call was also quite a lot. When you sum up all those expense, you would find surprisingly that it was so huge that it would diminish the extra money you made in a strange city away from home.
High salary is absolutely attractive. But you’d better figure it out whether sacrificing the time with family is worth it. After all, we earn more money in order to be happy.  And if the family is the one which makes you happy, then, stay with your family.
