In the lecture the speaker casts doubt on the idea that the Anasazi, a prehistoric human tribe from New Mexico's Chaco Canyon, vanished because of severe summer drought. The passage explains that a worldly sixty-year summer drought happened at the same time as the Anasazi. The speaker thinks, however, that this drought did not actually affected Chaco Canyon judging from the evidence that trees lived well during that period in Chaco Canyon.
The passage further argued that the Anasazi built irragation systems which means they suffered from water problem. But the speaker pointed out that wel-built irragation systems does not necessarily means there had been severe drought. On the contrary, it suggests that the Anasazi were well prepared for summer drought, and could get cope with it.
Finally the speaker says that new evidence have indicated that the drought were not severe enough to drove an entire nation away. It could be other alternative reasons such as disease, war or farm land problem which lead to the disappear of the Anasazi.
Patience is a great merit acknowledged by ancient Chinese people. But society has changed it structure and the way it runs. Nowadays, in this fast-paced society whether patience is a good strategy becomes a question. As far as I am concerned, it is a case-to-case question, but generally I believe we should acting quick and take more risks.
Patience is a good strategy in some cases. It always allow you to take a thorough thought about one thing instead of doing it in a hurry. According to my experience, human intelligence is not that strong, so we often need to search for information and ask experienced people before we start a task. Patience give us more time and more space to understand what we are facing and take a clear thought about the whole thing before the first step. In this case, patience is a good strategy.
But on the contrary, patience make us hesitate and lose opportunities while we are still thinking. In modern society, chances come quick and flee quick. If we are always watching, waiting and thinking, we can not catch any chance.
Some agues that even you have the chance, if you are not well-prepared for it, you will eventually miss it. However I think otherwise. Acting quick may bear more risks and may fail at the end, but during the process we learn our lesson. As the Chinese saying 'practice is the only criterion for truth'. I believe by failure, one can learn far more than research and asking the experienced. In a word, acting quick makes you have more chances and while failing more one success more.
In general, I believe patience sometimes do us good. But in modern society, it will be more beneficial if we act quickly. Practice can always increase our experience and failure give us more chance to success. In this way what we lose in not being patient can be balanced and eventually we get more chances to success.

Some countries have made a new policy. They offer an option for a four-day work week. If both the company and the employee agreed on choosing this option, the worker can only work for four days each week and the company pays only 80% of the common salary to such workers. The reading passage and the listening passage debate on whether this policy is good or not.
On the company's level, the reading passage suggests that, while having more rests, the employees can be more efficient and make fewer errors. And a company would not have pay more, because it can hire more people and each only spent 80% of the normal cost. The listening passage pointed out that 4-days worker would not only cost 80% the normal price due to their trainings before work, health insurance, the space they occupied and the computer they use. All these cost the same neglect their working days.
On the national level, author of the passage believes that as each worker only work 4 days and to make the same amount of job done companies need more workers. So this can be a solution to unemployment. However, the lecturer thinks otherwise. Firstly, employers would simply ask employees for overtime working to balance the loss from their abandon day. Secondly, employers would raise expectation to those who work four days. So they might not hire more people and thus unemployment problem remains unsaved.
At last, on the individual level, while the passage says that individuals can have more time to spent with their family and thus increase the quality of their lives; The listening passage points out that a four day job worker will lose his working stability, because they will probably come the first while the company need to reduce staff numbers. At the same time, as the lecturer suggests, four-day workers may have few chance to promote as the promoting positions, usually managers, need to have a whole week supervision over the company. Both conditions will affect the workers lives tremendously and negatively. So what has been suggested in the reading passage seems wrong.
