Do you agree or disagree with the following statements? To increase economic growth, government can neglect environmental concerns. (Environment)

The issue of balance between economy development and environment protection has raised wild public debate. In modern days, if a nation wants to be competitive and stay in a favorable status in international affairs, it has to pay more attention to its economic growth because the major reference of its power. Thus, the environment is always be neglected during development. However in a long run, it is detrimental for a government to do that.
On one hand, if a government neglects environmental concerns during developing its economy, the economic growth will be greatly impacted by environmental problems in the future. Environmental problems can cause disasters, for example, due to Three Gorges Project which expected to make great contribution to economy of China, Yangtz River floods every summer and cause countless loss and disastrous impacts to citizens and industry. More than that, government has to pay huge amount of money on relief. This and many other famous cases indicate that developing without concerning about environment will turn out to be harmful to economy.
On the other hand, I admitted that in some country, a government can let economy of its nation grows dramatically through manipulation thus compensate the impact of environmental problems. Nevertheless, the problems still exist and will develop into big danger. At first, pollutants can circle throughout the world, so the environmental hazard can spread out from a country and impact other countries. Thus, the omission of environmental issues of a government will bring about international dispute.
In the second, to neglect environmental concerns is to run counter to the idea about the duty of government—serving people and enhancing the welfare of citizen. There is no deny that advanced economic power guarantees society’s common wealth, for it allows more and more public services to be established and developed. However, environment is as well closely related to the life of every individual either directly or indirectly. To be specific, people intend to be ill if domestic water is poisoned by industry wastes; the quality of life declined if air is polluted.
To conclude, I can not agree with the statement that a government can neglect environmental issues for the economic growth, because problems of environment will not only affect economic construction, but also bring about other severe problems include social and international issues.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statements? Young people todays are more likely to help others than young people in the past. (Society)
Young people in this generation have entered an age of openness and collaboration, with the endeavors of many generations, advanced technology in nowadays have stimulated the youth becoming more likely to help others than in the past in at least three perspectives.
At first, educated people are more intended to help others. Technology has greatly improved the education system thus promoted human civilization. Generally speaking, the situation of global education has becoming better and impartial. All children especially those come from remote areas nowadays enjoy same rights in education, and governments encourage universal education through several policies. As a result, with the help of advanced technology, more and more children becoming well educated, through this way the youth have realized that helping others can not only make the world better but also make their own life meaningful.
Secondly, modern technological facilities contribute greatly to the ways young people offer their aid, at the same time, make the capable easier to access to the one who need help. For example, the invention of Internet in this century speeds up the prevalence of worldwide communication—students from big cities of western country can be quickly informed when there happens a disaster in Asia. To be specific, in the year of 2008, as soon as the terrible earthquake happened in Sichuan, people around world get this news through Internet or other media immediately. As we all know, it is the youth from all over the world that turned out to be the most active group. They offered their help through different methods. Some donated their money through Internet at home, some even took a plain from their home country to Sichuan as soon as possible.
Last but not the least, hero is always be respected by the society, but unlike in ancient times, with the development of technology of modern media and the openness brought by it, those who dedicate in helping others are easier to be recognized than before. Encouraged by this, there are increasing number of young people who are not intrinsically willing to help others are motivated. For example, if someone saved life of an injured man who just has an car accident on the street, it is very likely that people passing by will take a photo of this scenery and post on tweeter or bbs, then the one who gave his hand will be know by thousands of people immediately and be appreciated. Since young people are more likely to be recognized as hero, they are more likely to be motivated to do this.
In sum, young people are more willing to help others than young people in the past because of both intrinsic motivation and outside promotion.

Some people think that government and companies should keep their patents forever, while others think that governments and companies should share their discoveries with all the scientists in the world. What is your opinion and why? Use specific reasons to support your answer. (Technology)
Patent system exists till now and worked well during past centuries because it is useful when government and companies feel that their ideas and intellectual properties need protection. Some people thus intend to insist that patents should be kept forever. However, as far as I concern, sharing might bring more benefits to companies and human community, even though there are something to be given away at first.
At first, giving up patents is good for improving creativity, that is why fashion industry is so alive compare to others. Imagine that if you are no longer under protection of patent law as a creator, you have to always come up with new ideas to keep yourself staying in the favorable position in your field. As we all know, no patent is permitted in fashion industry because all designs are profitable, so that every idea can be stolen by anyone. As a consequence, designers are forced to be creative to update their products to keep their brands unique and outstanding. Admittedly, there are huge mount of plagiarism cases happen everyday, but it is evidently that fashion industry is always booming especially in China because creativity is largely improved at the same time.
In the second, sharing discoveries with all the scientists in the world can help to save money and social resources. Unlike fashion industry, the pharmaceutical industry is strictly protected by patents, but it is now in deep trouble. On one hand, pharmacy companies pay huge mount of money each year for keeping their patents effective, on the other hand, they spend much more money on the scientific research and drug development, but the upset fact is that very little of their inventions can be approved for clinical usage. As far as I know, there are more and more scientists realize that to revive the whole pharmaceutical industry, companies should stop paying on maintain some of their patents and start to share clinical research data to diminish wasteful redundant research. In doing so they are not just saving themselves but also benefiting humanity.
More importantly, in the modern time which is dramatically different from old ages, learning to give up and share with others is a new strategy for further profits. We are now harboring an age of openness and collaboration, if big companies could collaborate with and share small part of their resource to those who have development potentials, both of them will likely to win in the end. A famous example comes from IBM can illustrate this idea. They gave away 400 million dollars of software intellectual properties to Linux movement, and that gave them a multibillion payoff.
In conclusion, governments and companies can not only benefit themselves but also make contribution to society when they share their discoveries with other scientists in the world.

10.11
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important to choose friends that can have fun with you than to choose friends that will help you when you need them. (Friendship)
There are at least two kinds of friends--friends that we can have fun with and friends that we can turn to when help is needed. It seems like that choose people who will help us as friends is better, in fact I intended to believe that those who can have fun with are more important to keep friendship with, I would like to illustrate my opinion in three perspectives.
First, for people who work in big cities, relaxation is more needed than help. In fact, modern facilities around us can help a lot with our jobs, but we are mentally under great pressure in the workdays, in this way, funny friends are more important than capable friends. For example, anxiety and pressure from work place will be forgotten when funny friends make us burst into laughter. On the contrary, if we do not have such kind of friends, we will still suffer from anxiety and loneliness even after work no matter how many aids are gotten during work.
Second, friends who share common hobbies and can have fun with are relatively hard to find than capable people who can offer us help. Different people have different ways to get entertained, some are quite unusual. For example, I love climbing mountain in heavy rainy days because it is exciting and can relieve my pressure from work and study, but none of my friends are willing to do this with me except one, so I cherish him very much.
Third, the friendship between us and those who can have fun with can last much longer than those who are expected to offer help. There are a lot of capable and ardent people around us in big cities that are ready to give their hand for once or twice. However, even though we really appreciate friends that often help us when we need them, we actually own them, if we are less capable than our friends thus cannot offer help mutually, they will get tired and finally leave us. On the contrary, funny friends can always make us happy because we do not need to worry about the conflict of interests, they can also have fun when getting alone with us, it is a win-win relationship.
To sum up, It is more important to choose friends that can have fun with us than to choose friends that will help us when we need them.

10.9(其实是10.8的题我看走眼写错了,修改的童鞋辛苦了)
People have realized that education is essential to promote human civilization, to reduce war, starvation and poverty. Thus, people wish to be well educated and indeed, by the endeavors of many generations, we are now easier to be educated in nowadays.
At first, unlike in ancient times, females and minorities nowadays enjoy same rights in education, and governments encourage universal education through several policies. For example, outstanding students could be provided plenty stipend, thus relieve those students from financial difficulties especially those from poor family. In addition, the total mount of scholarship funding is ever increasing, which means more students could be supported. There are even some special scholarship provided especially to females and minorities. Generally speaking, the situation of global education has becoming better and impartial.
Secondly, technology advances contribute greatly to modern education, making people easier to be educated. For example, the invention of Internet in this century speeds up the prevalence of worldwide education—students from China countryside can enjoy resource from top tier university through website. For example, Justice, one popular open course from Harvard draws wide attention among Chinese students and helps them think more critically about right and wrong. In addition, plenty of facilities have been invented to enhance the efficiency of education such as multimedia settings and simulation software.
Last but not the least, people now generally aware the importance of education and understand that a well cultivated man will always be respected. There are increasing number of people who are intrinsically working hard to make themselves to be better educated for wining a favorable position in job marketing and social status.
Thus, people are easier to be educated because of both intrinsic motivation and outside promotion.

8.20
University is the place students accept higher education that indispensably for their future career, so that the majority of students will claim that professors should pay more attention to education rather than their own business, namely, research.
However, I cannot agree with this widely held opinion; I believe that the major efforts of professors should be spent on research. It is determined by both intrinsic motivation and external situation; a person who chooses university faculty as his career means that he determines to devote himself to academia and research. Externally, many universities wish to improve the ranking of their institutions. According to many rating agencies, for example the US NEWS, academic reputation of a research university contributes largely to its rank. Well, then who are generally responsible for research? Of course, professors. Likewise, the fame and salary of professors in the university relate directly to their research projects and publications. Thus, they are somehow forced to do good research and have good publications. For example, my teacher, a young associate professor, always put more emphasis on his research than lectures, it is not worth for him to concern hundreds of undergraduates who just attending the classes passively, but he wins a good reputation in our university, for he has good publications and funding resources.
As a student, I admit that we spend much money to attend university and wish to be well educated. However, I still believe that we should learn to study independently rather than waiting for a good professor. Learn to utilize facilities provided by their universities, such as library, network, and project studios etc, is our own responsibility. For illustration, students who interested in some subject could find a professor to do real project. By hard working on that project, he or she can not only have more oppotunities to communicate with professor but also obtaine many useful skills which cannot be learned from classes.
To conclude, the main responsibility of a university professor is definitely to spend major efforts in research rather than giving lecture, it is both good for university and professors themselves, for students who are initiative and willing to learn, they will also benefit a lot from their researches.

topic:Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: The best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide.

There are different ways to plan your travel, the best way is various according to different kinds of travelers. For example, travel led by guide is a safe and convenient choice for the elders and children, but not a perfect one for young couples who willing to enjoy more private time. As for me, traveling in a group is not the best choice; a self-guided tour would be better, for the following reasons.
At first, unlike a group which plans have already made by guide, a DIY tour needs me to take all responsibilities of schedule making, transportation and accommodation. This process sounds tough, but what it really is is a great chance to gain knowledge and to reinforce planning ability which benefits me a lot in daily life. For example, when I plan a travel, I will read a mount of materials in advance to learn about history, culture of that place, so I definitely know what will attract me most beforehand. Also I will refer travel notes of others, which provide plenty tips about how to enjoy a better trip with less money. In a word, self-guided travels helps me becomes a good planner while travels led by tour guide can not.
Secondly, sometimes travel with a group of people will be very disappointing. Different people have different preferred scenery spots. To maximize the satisfaction of all customers, tour guide tends to take them visit more places by decreasing time on each one, so what usually happens during travel is you want to know more about a fascinating site which particularly attracts you, but your guide urges you to leave and follow the group members because time is up. However, when you travel alone, the problem no longer exist, it is all up to you.
Finally, when traveling in a group, the chance for me to communicate with local people is limited. I admit that in most cases, tour guide introduces some anecdotes of the visiting site in an interesting and effective way which can made this place very impressive to tourists, however, one can never really understand its culture if he or she know nothing about in what way the local people live their daily lives in that place. Thus, for that purpose, the way led by tour guide is not the best way of travel.
To conclude, I personally disagree with the statement for I have my own way to enjoy a DIY trip, as mentioned above.

I admit that there are so many advantages for a person who lives in big cities, for example higher salary, better job condition and various ways of entertainment are so attractive to young adults. However, after marriage and giving birth, I prefer to move from big cities to countryside for a better way to take care of my family, especially my children, because there are some problems I have to confront if living in big cities.
In the first place, air pollution is the most serious problem. Even though I can stomach and get used of bad air condition in big cities, having my young children living in that environment is not appropriate. In contrast, countryside is a better choice to protect the respiratory system of my children because of good air quality. Additionally, good air quality is not only good for lung development, but also is of great impotence in refreshing my children’s minds after a whole day study.
Another problem in big cities I want to avoid is bad traffic. Because of that, much time of mine was wasted on commuting. Consequently, the decreased time I spend with my family result in less communication. In most cases children cannot aware their own illness such as infection, parents cannot know neither until they stay with children for longer time. With less time taking care of my family, I am in danger of ignoring health or learning problems of my children which may develop into big troubles in the future. However, that disadvantage will no longer exist if people living in countryside.
The third problem of big cities the parents should take into concern is high crime rate. Giving that children are fragile and credulous, the higher the crime rate, the more dangers. Since parents have to work thus can not stay with children all the time, they are always haunted by the worry of safety, but low crime rate in the countryside will release them from that worry.
In a sum, air pollution, bad traffic and crime are the major disadvantages of big cities for people to take care of their family members, thus, from my perspective I prefer to live in countryside.

In this lecture, the professor explained that according to a new guideline adopted in 1990s, the situation of Archeology science in Britain have been improved greatly and problems mentioned by the reading material actually no longer exist.
At first, according to new rule, several steps are forced to be taken before digging foundations for new buildings to keep artifacts from being destroyed. In a construction site, archeologists and officers will firstly initiate an exhaustive exam to determine its value for archaeology research, they then make plans for preserving and documenting artifacts. The construction should never be taken place until the whole work is done.
Secondly, due to the new rule, funding resource is less limited and more consistent. In contrast to the time when most of funding came from government, now the construction company is responsible for funding the exam process and later work. This rule works to help archaeologists of Britain extending their ranges of projects, the situation that only most important projects can be sponsored is gone.
Finally, the new guideline also is of great importance in overcoming the problem of Archeology job market. Well paid positions are provided at all stages of the research process including examination, making the preserving plans, doing the research, processing data and publishing articles. The booming of job markets results in the increasing number of archaeologists in Britain into the highest level than ever.
To conclude, those problems mentioned by this reading are gone because new rules work so effectively that changed almost the whole field of archaeology in Britain.

Due to the fast development of press industry, newspaper and magazines are now becoming one of the most prevalent and accessible resource that from what people can get knowledge of a country. Thus, many people believe that reading its domestic newspapers and magazines is the best way to understand the nation. To some extent, it is reasonable, but it is too early to determine it as the best way for the following reasons.
Admittedly, newspaper and magazines is informing and especially boast for their timeliness and richness of content. Nearly every aspect of a country can be introduced by reading them. It is noticeable that topics such as political, economy, science development and how people entertain themselves are constantly be discussed on almost every issue. Then for what newspapers and magazines is not yet the best way to get knowledge about a country?
At first, given that magazines are usually edited by a particular group of people who hold similar opinions, they would inevitablely be bias. For example, if editors of a magazine are environmentalists, they will usually criticize industry community too excessively that ignore the contributions made for that country. In addition, unlike the Internet that allows everyone post their comments after reports, prints do not, so we can hardly know the opinions of local readers by merely reading newspaper and magazines. Thus, newspapers sometimes may leave a misleading impress of a country to foreign readers.
In fact, to learn about a country thoroughly, there are plenty choices, each has its own merits. For example, a great alternative mean I specially recommend is reading literature especially the classical ones, for they depict a whole picture of that society in past time, it is helpful when people want an in-depth understanding of how this country evolved into the way it looks like today, in contrast, newspapers largely focus on contemporary issues. Also, travel is another great idea, because there traits that cannot be literately explained.
In a word, with the fast development of multimedia and transportation, the way we get to know a foreign county must be increasing and more comprehensive, so reading newspaper and magazines from that country is not the best one.
