Listen to a lecture in a geology class.
Hello everybody, I’m here today because i visited caves all over North America. Since you are going to study cave's formation, Dr. Bow asked me to come and share some of my experiences with you. In addition to describing some technical aspects about cave, i want to convey the sense of adventure that caver share. Recently, i visited the L cave in New Mexico. My dream has always been to discovery new path way. i had a chance here because L cave is so large that the discoveries are frequently made there. The cave itself wasn't even discovered until 1986. However, people in the area had figured it that there's must be a large cave nearby because the strong wind that blew from behind the rock of entrance. In normal seamounts of air under and at this cave, in order to maintain a balance of pressure xx, when I climbed into the cave, I had to fight 45 mile xx wind. After all that effort, i had to be extra careful about maintaining my energy level. People who are tired can get careless, and maybe more concern about getting out the cave and taking care of it. There were 4 nation's xxx like ocean waves, Christmas trees and other stuffs that no one has ever seen before. Caves are usually created by xxxxx above, but this cave was sculpted out by very powerful xx you would guess that grow up from below.

one type of natural spring geographers interested in is our txx spring. hiking through the woods, some of you may be surprised to see water flowing from an opening in the ground, that was no where near a steam or river, that xx spring. to help you understand why water might flow like this from underground, i'd like to explain the 2 basic conditions that are necessary for their formation. the first condition is that the water must be contained in an axx. an axx is an underground layer of rock sediment, that has holes and pores in it. and this pores rock can allows water to flow throuhg it freely. the axx must be inclined so that the upper end of it is exposed to the air at the surface of the ground. rain water under this through the exposed end and travels downward to the lower portion of the axx. the second condition is that above or below the axx, there must be layers of none porous or clay. these are called acroclude. and they block or hinder the flow of water. acroclude prevent the water from draining out of that axx. so, let's go back to our xxspring. they are always located above ground near the lxx and xxx an axx. archxx spring there those places were some holer crack down to through the acriclude and into the acrifer. now the rain water that has drained into the axx from the exposed upper end creates a little of pressure at the lower end. so if there is an xx, a xx that run from the axx to the surface, then the pressure push the water up through it and water come trickly out of the xxspring.

居然把所有的bebop都听成了“beat-box”……

Listen to a part of a talk in a music class. The class has been discussing the history of jazz music.
Ok, so in our last class we were discussing the big bands swing music. You remember this was a kind of dance music with a steady rhythm. But today we deal with music played by smaller jazz bands. It’s called beat-box. Now beat-box may use all sorts of music type of rhythms. Some are very irregular. We’ll talk more about that later. But first I want to talk about some of the social elements that I believe contributed to the development of the beat-box music. To do this, we have to look at when the beat-box rock and roll started becoming so popular, which was from the late 1930's through the 1940's, from the time of the great depression right in the Second World War. Now one factor that certainly helped create the environment for beat-box music was the decline of the United States economy. During the great depression, the economy suffered tremendously, and fewer people had money to spend on entertainment. Then during the Second World War the government imposed a new tax on public entertainment, which you may call a performance tax. The government collected money on performances including any type of acting, dancing, or singing, but not instrumental music. So, to avoid this tack, some jazz bands stopped to use singers all together. They started relying on the creativity of the instrumentalists to attract audiences. This is what beat-box band did. Now remember, a lot of big bands have singers, so instrumentalists simply played in the background and had occasionally solos, while the singer sings the melodies to the song, but not beat-box bands. So the instrumentalists had much more freedom to be created, so they experimented, playing the music faster, and using new irregular sorts of rhythms.

Listen to a professor talk to new students about an experiment in child development.
In our lab today, we will be testing the hypothesis that babies can count as early as 5 months age. The six babies here are all less than 6 months old. You'll be watching them on close TV and measuring their responses. This experiment is based on the well established observation that babies stare longer if they don't see what they expect to see. First we are going to let 2 dolls move slowly in front of the babies. The babies will see the 2 dolls disappear behind the screen. Your job is to record in seconds how long the babies stare at the dolls when the screen is removed. In the next stage, 2 dolls will again move in front of the babies and disappear, but then a third doll will follow. When the screen is removed, the babies can only see 2 dolls. If we are right, the babies will now stare longer, because they expect 3 dolls but only see 2. It seems remarkable to think that such young children can count. My own research has convinced me that they have this ability from born. But whether they do or not, perhaps we should raise another question: should we take advantage of this ability by teaching children mathematics since such a young age? They have great untapped potential, but it is good for parents to pressure young children.

Listen to a part of a talk in a biology class.
Before moving on to a new topic, I want to finish up our unit on a rexx, by looking at what it seems very unusual aspect of spider behavior, a species where the young spiders actually consume the body of their mother. Unlike most other spiders, this species lays one and only one clash of 40 eggs in her lifetime. The spiders catch in spring or early summer in sight in ... their mother spends the warm summer months bringing home large insects, often ten times as weight for meal. The catch is always significantly more than the young spiders can eat. So the mother fats herself up on the extra prey and stores the nutrients in her extra unfertilized eggs. As the weather turns colder and there are fewer insects prey to hunt, that's when the nutrient stores in the extra eggs begin to seep into mother's blood stream. So, when there are no more insects to feed to the young spiders, they will attach themselves to the mother's leg join, and draw on nourishment by sucking the nutrient rich blood. After several weeks, the mother is depletely on nutrient and she dies. But then, how did the young get nourishment? They start to seed on one another. Now if you recall our discussion of Darwin, you'll see the evolutionary value of this. Only the strongest spider of the clash will survive this cannibalism. And the mother spider will have ensured that her genes have an increase chance of survival through future generations.

You might think that most of the patients at sleep clinic are being treated for sleeplessness, commonly referred to as insomnia, but that is not the case. The majority of sleep clinic patients suffer from disorders of excessive sleep or hypersomnia. While most insomniacs somehow manage to drag themselves through the day and function at acceptable, although not optimal levels, this is not so for people who suffer from hypersomnia. They are incapacitated by irresistible urges to sleep during the day, often in inappropriate situations, as business meetings, in supermarkets, or parties. Even more dangerous is their failure to remain awake when driving or operating machinery. Falling asleep in such situations could obviously be life threatening. Many hypersomniacs suffer from narcolepsy, for which the primary symptom is excessive daytime sleepness. Though not apparent in childhood, this symptom most often appears for the 1st time during the teen years and continues throughout a person's life. The sleep attack may occur as many as 15 to 20 times during the course of the day, and last for periods from 15 minutes up to 2 hours. What can be done to help those suffering from narcolepsy? There are certain drugs that can help, and specialists suggest voluntary napping to decrease the frequency of such sleeping attacks.

I know you are anxious to get your permits to get started, but there are just a few things I’d like to mention that might help you avoid trouble during your stay. First of all, make sure you have carried adequate water. You’ll need it in hiking especially in this heat. A good rule of the sum is to bring one gallon per person per day this time of year. Don’t try to rely on the park's natural spring to supply all your water need. And please do not use soap in the springs. It’s your responsibility to protect the park's natural features. For those you have to stay beyond weekend, make sure that you set up camp well away from dry creek banks. We may get some heavy rainfall, and those creek banks could quickly become filled with water, and you and all your equipment might end up washed down steam. When you pick up your permits, you'll also get the park's service booklet. It’ll tell you everything you need to know about the hiking trails. They vary in lengths, of course, but most of them are under 5 miles, relatively easy day hikes. Remember, if you hike solo, make sure you let someone know you're going and when they can expect you back. And for your own safety, we recommend that you not climb rock faces. A lot of the rock throughout the park is very unstable. One final word, watch out for poisonous snakes. R snake activity is at peak this time of year, especially at night. For your own good, we recommend wearing protective clothing, and carry a flashlight after dark.

Listen to a part of a talk in a business class.
In the 18th century, French economists protested the excessive regulation of the business by the government. Their motto was laisser faire. Laisser faire means let the people do what they choose. In the economic sense, this meant the government should be responsible for things like maintaining peace and protecting property rights. It should not be interfere with private business. It shouldn't create regulations that might hinder business growth, nor should be responsible for providing subsidies to help. In other words, government should take a hand off the approach to business. For a while, in the United States, laisser faire was a popular doctrine. The thing quickly changed. After the civil war, politicians rarely opposed to government's generous support of business owners. They were only too glad to support government land grants and loans to railroad owners for example. Their regulations kept tariffs high and that helped protect American industrialists against foreign competitions. Ironically, in the late 19th century, a lot of people believed that the laisser faire policy was responsible for the country's industrial growth. It was generally assumed that because business owners didn't have a lot of external restrictions played on them by the government, they can pursue their own interests, and this was what made them so successful. But in fact, many of the individuals would not have been able to meet their objectives if not for government's support.

Today we are going to practice evaluating the main tool used when addressing groups--the voice. There are 3 main elements that combine to create either a positive or negative experience for listeners. They can result a voice that is pleased to listen to and can be used effectively, or they can create a voice that doesn't hold attention, or even worse, causes an adversary reaction. The three elements are volume, pitch and pace. When evaluating volume, keep in mind that a good speaker will adjust to the size of both the room and the audience. Of course, with an amplifying device like a microphone, the speaker can use a natural tone. But the speaker should not be dependent on microphones. A good speaker can speak loudly without shouting. The second element, pitch, is related to the highness or lowness of the sounds. High pitches are for most people more difficult to listen to. So, in general, speakers should use the lower registers of their voice. During the presentation, it's important to vary pitch to some extent in order to maintain interest. The third element, pace, that is how fast or slow words and sounds are articulated, should also be varied. A slower pace can be used to emphasize an important point. Note that the time spent not speaking can be meaningful too. Pauses ought to be used to signal transitions or create anticipation. because pause give the listener time to think about what was just said, or even to predict what might come next, it can be very effective when moving from one topic to another. What I’d like you to do now is watching and listening to a video tape, and use the forms I gave you to rate the speaking voices you hear. And tonight, I want you to go home and read a passage into a tape recorder and evaluate your own voice.

Let’s proceed to the main exhibit hall, and look at some of the actual vehicles that have played a prominent role in speeding up mail delivery. Consider how long it used to take to send a letter across a relatively short distance. Back to the 1600's, it took two weeks on horseback to get a letter from Boston to NY, just a distance of about 260 miles. Crossing a river was also a challenge. Ferry servers were so irregular that carriers would sometimes wait hours just to catch a ferry. For journeys inland, there was always a stage coach, but the ride was by no means comfortable because it had to be shared with other passengers. The post office was pretty ingenious about some routes. In 19th century, in the southwestern desert, for instance, camel was brought in to help get the mail through. In Alaska, reindeer were used. This practice was discontinued because of the disagreeable temperament of these animals. We’ll stop here a minute so that you can enter this replica of a railway mail car. It was during the age of the iron horse that delivery really started to pick up, in fact, the United States transported most bulk mail by train for nearly 100 years. The first airmail service didn't start until 1918. Please take a few moments to look around. I hope you'll enjoy your tour, and as you continue on your own, may I suggest you visit our impressive phxx collection. Not only can you look at some of more unusual stamps issue, but there is an interesting exhibit on how stamps are made.

Are human beings inherently generous or selfish? A new study finds that when people have to make choice instantly, their first impulse is cooperation, which indicates that the generosity is innate. Only when they have more time to consider their choices do behave more selfishly. The research is in the journal Nature. In the study, researchers ran several tasks in which each participant in a small group receive money, and then had to decide how much to invest in a shared group fund. The more time people had to choose how much they donate, the less they gave. Subjects told they had to make a decision within 10 seconds even gave more than others who were told they were to wait the same 10 seconds before deciding. Because snap decisions are based on intuition, the researchers can conclude it that generosity is the intuitive human response. By given time, we can reason our way to a more selfish decision. This intuitive cooperation may be either genetically hard wired or a cultural construct. Either way, next time i run a fund raiser, I’m bringing a stopwatch.

the healthy hunger free kids recently went into effect, which requiring at least one serving of fruit veges on kids' school lunch trays. but how do they actually eat those veges? well, one way seems to be simply gese what they are called. for example, instead of carrots, how about offering exrevision carrots? when we searched at that 5 NY elementary schools, kids eat twice as many of bug body's favorate food. a second experiment is 2 more schools result of brooklin green beans, deeply on popular items. but when we named to tiny ticy tree tops, and silly dilly green beans, veges consumption again doubled. those all appear in the journal preventive medicine. but the cool names were needed to be just one tool in fighting influenced kids. because even at the end of the study, only 5% of the kids were asking for brooklin green beans, up from 2% before. nevertheless, it just starts. with the name like tiny ticy tree tops, maybe brooklin has a better chance to avoiding the cookie crazy junk container, you know, the garbage can.

Sex could be, well, kind of gross. So, how do we have sex? Once were turned on or turned out, it get harder for his staff to turn it off, women anyway. Gross thing just don't seem as gross when guys are feeling xx. So such study in the journal plus one. Researchers found the sexual arousal dampens the disgust responding woman, both in the bedroom and outside of it. In this study, 3 groups of women, unaroused, generally aroused, and specifically sexually aroused, were assigned a series of texts associated with disgust response. Some texts are sexual, like lubricating a vibrator. Others are really unsexy, such as drinking from a cup with a big insect in it. Sexually aroused women were the most ready to lubricate sex toys, but they were also less squeamish than the other women about drinking from a bug cup. The goals to advance the treatment of sexual dysfunction and the lower levels of arousal then can underlie it. So the people would say yes to the mass.

In the wild, salmon, tuna or other active migrating fish get a lot of exercise. But when these fish are raised in captivity without predators or the need to fight their way upstream against the current, they turn into fish couch potatoes. And not unlike sedentary humans, lethargic fish are more prone to getting sick. As many as 20% of farm salmons die in captivity, apparently, because they are simply out of shape. A new technical book called swimming physiology of fish presents scientific research on how various training routines, water turbulence, diet and even use of robotic fish as swim trainers can keep captive fish conditioned. this fishical fitness research has shown that when captive salmon exercise regularly, they grow bigger, have stronger hearts and immune systems, and healthier than sedentary brethren. For example, in a region study found that one salmon had to swim against an artificial current; they were much less likely to get a common fish virus than the body is still in the water. The bottom line? Healthier profits for fish farmers and healthier fish on your dinner table.
