美国教授对教育学几个分支及就业的看法

以下摘自我和外教的e-mail通信。她是TESOL专业的，目前在中国任教
Teacher education; if you want to be a teacher you go into this field.  However teaching is the starting point for most of education but teaching is the core of the education field so you can use it as a starting point to anything in education.  In fact it is the best way to go.

Educational psychology:  if you go into this field you will need to have a Ph.d. to do anything with this major.  If you get a Ph.d. then you can do the teaching part in a university.

Curriculum and instruction - doesn't have many jobs because it is a too highly specialized field.  It would be best to start with teaching first or you won't do well in this field of just writing curriulum for the classroom because no one will hire you because you can't write curriculum if you haven't had experience teaching in a classroom.

Higher education:  You would have to get a Ph.d. This is for teaching in universities or colleges.

Teaching English as a Second/ Foreign Language - this major is good if you want to be a teacher abroad like me and you teach a foreign language like English or Chinese.

Bilingual/Bicultural Education - this is the same major as above; just a different name.  You could do this if you want to teach abroad, but the field is becoming more and more competitive so you would need experience in the classroom as well as a Ph.d. in the future to do anything with this.

Overall, I think you should get a teaching credential certificate.  Then you can decide what field to specialize in after you have done some student teaching or teaching.  As I stated earlier, teaching is the core of education.  It is like a ladder teaching is the first rung on the ladder.
