But I think the answer should be D:

Because the first sentence of this passage is "This is not to deny that the Black gospel music of the early twentieth century differed in important ways from the slave spirituals.", which, apparently, implies that the immediate preceding text should state the two kinds of music are seemingly different. However, why the answer is B rather than D?
