Volunteer works have been widely organised by many middle schools. Some argue that these volunteer works might cause some negative influences in students’ study and life. As I am concerned, although there might be some problems result from these volunteer works, the benefit of proper volunteer work organised by middle schools would outweighs its problems.
It is clear that the volunteer work is beneficial to both students and the community. Firstly, due to the rapid development of technology, current middle school students tend to spend most of their spare time on some individual’s activities which involve with the internet or video games. As a result, they lack the sense of teamwork and social responsibility. Appropriate volunteer work would offer them the access to cooperate with each other, and to enhance their awareness of a member of the society, which are significant in their adult years. Besides, the advantages of volunteer work for the community are enormous. For instance, some certain needs of disabled men or homeless individuals could be met by these volunteer work or services.
Despite the benefits to students and the community, volunteer work might cause some problems to those students who take part in. As everyone knows, the main task of student is acquiring knowledge. Students who spend too much time on community services might perform worse on study, thereby affecting their opportunities to obtain higher education. In addition, some students of impoverished households who need to do part-time job for supporting their family may lose the extra income because they are engaging in too much volunteer work.
Considering these factors, I think middle schools should firstly aim at theoretical education. Then organise proper optional volunteer work to cultivate students’ abilities of group cooperation and sense of social responsibility, and to help the community.
