Issue 38 “In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.”
In the age of highly developed technology and communication, many advanced mass media such as television have emerged and been playing a more and more important role in our society and daily life. Many people complained that we can learn so much by watching television that reading books is no longer so important as it ever before. More convenience and information has been brought into our lives by television, however, it can not take the place of reading books at any rate.
Though each has its advantages and disadvantages, television and books are two kinds of completely different mass media, which are not comparable to win over each other. With the television, we can enjoy vivid three-dimensional and continuous video over long distances in almost no time, which rules in carrying live broadcasting, figural tutorial and remote programs; and we can know what has happened and will happen in every hole and corner of the whole world with on need to go out. All of these are the people of hundreds of years ago cannot have imagined. However, when it comes to the field related to abstract ideas and theories, accurate literal descriptions, repetition and comparison, television is not as well competent and efficient as the traditional books. Taking the study of some animals, such as some species of fish, as example, we could learn what they look like and which circumstance they live in, and at the same time listen to the introduction of the background knowledge about their habits, behaviors and so on. Yet when we want to learn much more detailed information about the structure of this species, or its evolution progress, we need to turn to the books finally.
Reading books is an active process, in which we can easily make choice of what and when to read according to our interests and tastes, while television never can provide such convenience. The programs on television are arranged beforehand, and all what the audiences can do is to choose whether watch the programs or not. Moreover, as we know, mass media generally consist of profit-seeking entities, whose chief objective is to maximize profits. Based on this objective, it is justifiable for them to make their programs and reports focus on the issues to cater the public's needs and tastes. So we are not difficultly to find today there are so many useless contents, even rubbish information, congesting in our daily television programs.
With regard to the appealing easygoing nature, television can help a lot in study. It can serve to the role of an introducer, which provides diversified basic knowledge to the beginners without any hostility. When people get familiar with them and develop interest in specific fields, they can read books for further studies. However, it is still impossible for television to take the place of reading books, yet they can cooperate to make it easier and more interesting for people to learn. |
