22)

Claim: The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models.

Reason: Heroes and role models reveal a society's highest ideals.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

正文:

Heroes and role models refer to those men and women idolized by people. It is true that these idols reflect some qualities that are most valued by the societies in which they live, but they do not necessarily reveal the highest ideals of a society. Moreover, heroes cannot represent the character of a society, because the qualities they embody are often what we fail to possess.

Indeed, heroes often hold certain important traits that are most valued by their societies. We respect Joan of Arc because of her bravery and persistence, we honor Mahatma Gandhi for his belief in peace and equality, and we esteem Abraham Lincoln for his pursuit of freedom and equity. These people are perceived as heroes because the virtue and qualities they possess are recognized and encouraged by their societies.

However, this does not mean that heroes and role models necessarily represent a society’s highest ideals. It must be noted that heroes and role models are selected by their contemporaries who are confined to the time and context in which they live, while the highest ideals of a society must be able to withstand long-standing test and scrutiny. As a result, some “heroes” represent only the temporary perceptions and notions of their time, which can be distorted and misleading. For an extreme example, Adolf Hitler was once deemed as the hero of Germany. However, this so-called “hero” brought nothing but wars and disasters to the entire world. So is Fascism and Nazi is the highest ideal of the Germans? Of course not.

Besides, even if we look at those virtuous and righteous heroes, we cannot say that examining their characters is the best way to understand the character of the societies that choose them as role models. No one is perfect. Heroes and roles models possess flaws and drawbacks as well as virtuous traits. Their characters are as multifaceted as you and me. In fact, heroes are defined not by their characters, but their achievements. For example, Martin Luther King would not have been deemed as a hero without his achievement in combating racial inequality through nonviolence.

Furthermore, heroes hardly reveal the characters of their societies since what they represent is exactly what we do not have. It is true that Mahatma Gandhi represents peace and equality, but does this imply that India was a peaceful and equal country back in his lifetime? No. Heroes are made heroes not for their commonness, but for their peculiarity. We admire brave heroes because bravery is not a commonplace character, and we honor those equity fighters because our society is often unjust. In short, heroes and role models reflect ideals that are contrary to reality, and thus cannot serve as a representation of a society’s character.

Therefore, to develop insights into the character of a society, one should avoid narrowing his vision on its heroes and role models. Society is a complex entity comprising a variety of people and characters, and the best way to develop a thorough understanding of a society is to adopt an overview of its general populace rather than a fixed sight on a number of special individuals.

Para1 Line 3 ideal
