Fake It Till You Make It
The Good News About China’s Knockoff Economy
By Kal Raustiala and Christopher Sprigman
July/August 2013

31min+12min

Summary: By introducing the Xiaomi Smartphone, the author talks about the shanzhai phenomenon from mobile phone market-Hiphone, Weibo to Youku. And he deems that the imitation is not only limited to copy the original technique, but also revises the technique in order to satisfy more customers, expanding market larger than the prior products have done. Even it’s not allowed in the U.S, innovation based-on foreign techniques is official proved, like cultivating a culture. Some people think it might hurt the prior’s benefit, however, the imitation actually propel the innovation and at the same time make advertisement for the original product, like Subway’s food, Mao, Microsoft. In conclusion, the author is optimistic in the shanzhai phenomenon, for it either cultivates innovation, making average people enjoy the high-technique, or propagates the original products for free, making those foreign companies earn a good profit in China.
