The statement mentioned above is discussing how to be an effective leader. Leadership is an far-reaching topic, in which some people sincerely believe that leaders should maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, while other people might hold the opinion seriously that leaders should pursue the sublime goal regardless of his ethical and moral standards. In my view, a successful leader should pay attention to both the ethical and moral standards and his or her sublime goal.

As most people believe, an effective leader should maintain the highest ethical standards. Consider the chairmen in the history of America, from Washington to Lincoln, and to others. They all act as best paragons on ethical and moral standards and their citizens believe sincerely to their leadership just as to their highest ethical and moral standards. Therefore, it is the responsibility of those leaders to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards and the right of their public to supervise those leaders in order to keep the prosperity of their society.

Simply put, without attention to one's ethical and moral standards would result in serious disasters sometimes. Examples that leaders who would not maintain the highest ethical and moral standards fail to meet the expectation from the public abound. Within the scope of the whole world, these events concerning leaders, from the sex harassment of Bill Clinton, to the assistance on corruption of Nixon in Watergate, all cause the chaos in society and do harm to every citizens and the society as a whole. Not only losing on economy but also the formation of mental displacement of their public occurs. These examples call for the establishment of better paradigm of leader, especially on the terms of ethical and moral standards.

However, an effective leader should pursue some sublime aim - targeted on the interest of the general public - other than only to maintain highest ethical and moral standards. All of us are astonished at how scientific and technological developments, especially those which play positive effects on society, have promoted the progress of the society dramatically. However, we must take into consider the background of those scientists and researchers, which is more important than those achievements in the surface. Consider those scientists in Middle Age, from Copernicus to Bruno, then to Galileo, as well as Darwin. Though they had the best talents and intelligences, the Inquisition would not like them to explore the truth, which seems on the opposite way of their dogma. Fortunately, in modern time, in which the control from the Inquisition has been overturned, scientists and researchers need not risk their life to explore the unknown world. That might be the key to why the science of present time increased dramatically. From the reasoning earlier, we would not go very far to see the part played by leaders in promoting or hindering the development of society and thereby determining the speed of the progress. It is the responsibility of our leadership to head forward to the interest of the general public.

Furthermore, it is easily understandable that without one's sublime goals, which means that the society as a whole would lose their way in the direction of human freedom, and even more seriously, missing the sublime goals, the society as a whole would be like a plane of sand or water without its origin. The example mentioned earlier about the Inquisition would illustrate this point well. People under the control of the government in Middle Age are afraid of the punishment from the top and have no passion on their production, and thereby pull off the development of the society and pursuing on their freedom.

To conclusion, I would claims that leader in modern society should not only keep in the highest ethical and moral standards, but also pursue higher goals - the accomplishment of interests on their public.
