Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People care more about public recognition than about money, so even if no more money is given, public recognition can still make people work harder.

Public recognition and money play as important motivations to stimulate people to work. However, I believe that for most people money is the major force behind people's enthusiasm for work.

Salaries provide us the material foundation for lives. If people want to obtain any stuff, they must pay others their money, from the daily necessity to cars and houses. Without enough money, our material desire can hardly be satisfied; even, we may have to suffer starvation. In my country, sex workers have a low social reputation. However, some people still are obligated to work as sex workers, since they need money to feed themselves or their families. Similarly, for many people who live a poor life and have not obtained decent education, they more care about how much money they can earn to improve their life quality rather than about how much public recognition they can get.

Money provides us social recognition. In the society, people are engaged in different kinds of jobs and pursuing their goals in various fields; it is very hard to estimate a person's ability exactly. Thus, generally, for simplicity, a person's ability and social status is estimated according the money he has. Although this kind of standard of evaluation is so simple and rough, it is widely used in our society and there seems to be no better standards.

I admit that all the things I discussed above are not carved in stone. For a minority part of people, they worked more for public recognition than for money, like the successful scientists or successful doctors. For these people, reputation in their professional areas seems to be the most important things. Even so, this circumstance often happens in their latter part of life when they have enough money to satisfy most of their material desires.

In conclusion, I would argue that generally money is the most direct and basic motivation stimulating people to work harder. The importance of things money can bring to us, that is material foundation of life and social recognition, is the most compelling justifications of this point.

In the lecture, the speaker points out that the three methods mentioned in the reading passages are not satisfactory solutions to the decline of Torreya. The speaker gives her reasons to cast doubts on the three methods one by one.

First of all, the speaker claims that planting Torreya in its old habit will not succeed. According to the speaker, although in the past the microclimate in northern part of Florida is suitable for the growth of Torreya, currently, this circumstance has changed a lot. Affected by the change of the climate of larger region and factors like global warming and the draining of local wetland, these microclimates in Florida has become drier, which makes Torreya cannot live in these areas. Thus, to reestablish Toreeya in their old habitat is not a wise option.

Secondly, the speaker also mentions that the second method is also not satisfactory, since planting Torreya in forests further north may lead to ecological disaster. In order to support this point, the speaker mentions that in the past planting a kind of tree in north forests caused an ecological disaster. This kind of tree spread very quickly in its new habitat, which killed off a lot of local plants.

Finally, the speaker challenges the third method--that is planting Torreya in reaserch center, in the reading passage by saying that the limited capacity of research center may make Torreya cannot resist some diseases. The speaker points out that Torreya can resist diseases in long term only if its population is large and genetically diverse enough. However, the space of research center is so limited that Torreya must suffer diseases in such environment.
