Some people believe that government officials must carry out the will of the people they serve. Others believe that officials should base their decisions on their own judgement.

The political issues are highly complicated combined with the contemporary situation of society including economy, relationship with other countries and so on.  Having realized that, we have to admit that only government officials who are equipped with professional knosledge and skills and abundant experience instead of common public can make policies. So, when these expertise are making decisions, they have to make the most of their capacity to evaluate the consequence that may come.
Undoubtedly, government officials have more experience to tackle political issues, so they always have their own mind on these issues which may differ from the people’s. Looking back in the history of human-being, most of successful politicians stick to their own mind and make decisions relying on their own judgement. Taking Roosevelt as an example, his New Deal which promoted direct and indirect control of the government over the economy, though controversial, succeeded in reforming the economy system of the United States and bringing it back to normal way after the Great Depression. Another example that contributes to this claim is Deng Xiaoping, the father of Chinese economy reform and opening policy. Though people back then thought it too risky and were anxious about the outcomes the reform would bring if this failed, Deng believed that it was the moment for China to reform the economy system and open itself to the whole world and insisted on this policy which turned out to be the most memorable milestone in the history of China and led to the booming of Chinese economy in the recent 30 years.
However, that does not mean government officials should completely ignore the will of people especially when his or her own judgement is aberrant and may lead to tragedies. Not every government official has the astute and right judgement on the society as Roosevelt and Deng did. If the leader has made the wrong decision and stick to it, then the whole society will be in chaos. For example, Hitler’s blind adherence that Jews might endanger his country led to the most crucial genocide in the history of human. And the Mao’s cultural revolution resulted from his blind judgement led to the darkest decade of china in the recent 100 years. So, the adherence of aberrant principles indicates nothing but ignorance and foolish stubbornness and may result in unforgivable mistakes.
So, these examples where government officials make the wrong decision just according to their own belief emphasize the importance of taking the will and the voice of people into consideration. If Hitler and Mao would listen to their people, those tragedies could have been avoided. We have to legislate to assure that the general public can make their own voice sound so to protect their general welfare.
To sum up, the will of the general public must be a part of criterion government officials will base on when they make decisions. However they still cannot simply carry out these wills since the public lack the thorough evaluation of the whole situation, the professional knowledge and the comprehensive perspective. Instead, they have to make decisions mostly rely on their own judgement, taking the will of the public as an auxiliary at the same time.
