The arguer is trying to convey a conception that although a few individuals or small groups such as family, friends, teachers and celebrities do have some influences on a person’s thoughts and behaviors, yet the society as a whole plays a decisive part in the establishing of one’s characteristics and attitudes. I partly agree with this kind of definition for actually it is the two sides together that shape the very feature of ourselves.
Generally speaking, these two sides functions differently in the shaping of one’s characters. The whole society helps building up the fundamental features of a person while those individuals or small groups of people helps building up some detailed ones. Just like drawing a picture of someone, the former is trying to give the rough sketch of him while the latter is trying to draw the detailed facial features – even the wrinkle around the eyes.
Considering from the prospect of the society, one’s basic characteristics are formed according to the circumstances he live in. There are all kinds of traditional customs with the functions in the building of one’s basic features such as the way of thinking and the relationships as a whole. For example, the totally different ways of thinking between easterner and westerner is the result of the different society and culture in which they are brought up. We easterners care more about the family members and value the affections between family members or friends while the westerners are the opposite, they are much more individualistic and the family is not that closely tight. What’s more, westerners are concerned about the independency while easterners the cooperation. These differences are all aroused because of the differences of the two societies.
Considering from the prospect of the individuals and small groups, the concrete features of one’s characteristics is influenced mostly by the people around him. The family members, friends and teachers will set up a sample to a person and their behaviors may probably become the target those children trying to copy. Think of two babies born at the same time, they grow up in the same place with means that the social circumstances are the same for the two, but the family conditions of them are not the same – one’s family is harmonious and happy while the other’s is not that quiet, they may have quarrels frequently or something like that. As we all know, parents are the first teachers of one’s life, their effort on the growth of a child is immeasurable. Years later we will see that the first baby will have grown into an affable and agreeable person and the other may be naughty or even disagreeable. They will have differences in many ways such as ways of speaking and treating people, attitudes towards life and so on.
To sum up, what I’m trying to say is that one is defined not only by the society as a whole, but also those who are around us, these two hands together create the lifelike sculpture of ourselves. Only a steady and harmony social circumstance as well as the happy and tight relationships of a small group can there be an admirable person with positive attitude and a warm heart. (535)
