Having been experiencing various changes or innovations of society, nation, technology, mankind is now facing a brand-new world, different from any periods in history, together with the self-improvement leading to the outside changes. However, all these differences do not indicate that the present bares no resemblance to the past. In fact, our daily life connects tightly with the study of history, so do the development of an individual, the deeds of political leaders, and the academic world.
As far as an individual is concerned, what one has done now is due not only to the circumstances he is facing, but also to the knowledge he receives from history, famous historic leaders' experience in every field and similar events happening in the past. "Eureka!" the last cry from the outstanding Archimedes inspires a great many young students to devote themselves to the science world, yearning for the same outburst of joy truly from heart, regardless of the monetary income and profits around them, but the truth of life. In this respect, the figure in history set up an admirable example for the descendents to pay respect to, and some of who are prepared to march to the same goal of science. "I want to be a scientist in future" is the representation of the effect produced on the young by their acknowledgement of a successful figure of yesterday.
Apart from our daily life, the study of history opens a rich book for those political leaders to refer to in front of some hot potatoes, since many sophisticated great names, one of people considered by Aristotle as by nature political being, left a lot treasure for us, telling us democracy is best for modern society, and also the concept of the way to make peace is by war, misleading somewhat nowadays. With both its positive and negative effects, admittedly, we, offspring of our great mind, cannot escape from their influence, but to seek and to receive silent advice from them.
History, one of academic fields, links closely with others, for instance, literature, philosophy, and, certainly, history itself. Tremendous novels, myths, and poems are about great events and well-known figures in history, history instilling vitality into literature material. Shakespeare's most brilliant tragedy, Hamlet, takes the tale of a Denmark princess, and reaches to the culmination of literature in Renaissance period, even the present time. Professions in philosophy can hardly research further without reading the anecdotes of Nietzsche to explore why such ideas distinct from others calls on him. What is quite certain is that those historians study history only for history's own sake, without giving any consideration to what they should eat at breakfast in their daily life. What appeals them is the magical fossil hidden underground, and most importantly, the mysterious period in history it stands for.
Without the study of history, what will happen to our present world? So much is certain: We would have our doctors and preachers, our lawyers and defendants, our marriages and births, but our attitude towards the world is different. No one has the spiritual connection with the past, but solitarily lives without an example, an ancient advise. The study of history is not to know on the exact date and in the precise place a particular event happened, but what caused it and what were the afterthoughts, the experience and the improvement, all these beneficial to our daily life, political life and academic life.
History, as dead as a book, is the most abundant book in the world, full of wonderful events, sparkling thoughts, details of life, and it will be added till the unknown day of someday. It is hardly to deny every lake, river, mountain, waterfall around us has a history, and their history, together with the traditional spirit and unique culture behind them, gives birth to us, who carry them on in nearly every aspect of our life, in order to fulfill writing our own history, the book for the later generation. |
