160 The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
When we deal with the increasingly complex real-world situations, sometimes we must make a final decision to let the things go on. Actually, the leaders just serve this end. Without a leader, it is very much likely that we may miss the best time in ceaselessly disputing over whether we should take a certain action. Nevertheless, Leaders must be conscribed within the sphere of democracy or the personal liberty will be spoiled, while the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives, without which large amount of time and resources will be dissipated without any actual gain, should also be emphasized.
Since our world seems to us much more complex than ever before, and also since personal liberty has been significantly enhanced, people always have reasons and rights to question some plans, ideas and even basic principles firmly stuck to before. Although the freedom of speech is quite necessary, or any wrong doings would probably be covered, prompt judgment should be made to catch up with the pace. When a leader forms a determination, he is surely burdened with great responsibility. And since then, he will inevitably face the arising suspicion and even castigation. Because everyone has his own opinion and more importantly some oppositions may in the end turn out to be true, the leader shouldn't reject or even resent these remarks. But in reality, there emerge too many advices, assent or dissent, whereas leaders are supposed to deal with it with enough resolution, otherwise the best time for taking measures will be lost. For one example, during the famous Cuba Missile Crisis, president Kennedy quickly required that Cuba must be disarmed of the medium range ballistic missiles from Soviet Union, or that the US Army without question would attack it. Certainly, many objections arose during the process of this decision that seems to be a most effective one making US free from threatening.
If a leader always shifts with the outside remark, he is obviously not able to concentrate on his plan whether it is right or not. So he, of course, cannot achieve anything without overcoming this propensity. As is clear, when a man deviates from his half-done job to go on with another that is urged by other people, he will undoubtedly lose much time and energy. If we consider this to be a natural change aiming at gaining a better result, things will not be the same when such change happens often. That is, he will always fails even if his original plan is correct.
On the other hand, the hesitation, which is always considered to be the result of the leader's discreet character, may mostly originate from cowardice, which could not possibly be denied. The burdens are too heavy, the undesirable result is sometimes too embarrassing, so the leader must be equipped with the weapons of courage and resolution. In this way, the chances of success will be greatly increased.
As a result, the leader must have a brave heart like William Wallace to confront the results of his decision whether good or not, but to make thing complete, great attention should also be paid to the voice from others. Correctness and courage are both vital to the final result! |
