Issue196 “Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life.”

The 20-century witnesses a rapid progress of human world that owns much to the highly improved technology, which facilitates humans’ life and fulfills people’s curiosity to world and the universe. While at the same time, highly advanced technology and science also bring about some disastrous side effects, such as nuclear weapon and ethical problems. As a consequence, some claims that high technology creates more problems than it solves, and it may threaten or damage the quality of human life. Although it is true to some aspects, I still hold that technology can bring more benefits than damage if human beings are willing to put more efforts on how to overcome this barrier. There are some reasons cited afterwards.

On the first page of the 20-century, human beings were hunger and eager to know what the world was really like, they were tired of animal powers to operate their world, and they were urgent to find new methods to improve their health. The curiosity of recognizing the world and decision to liberate their manual power drove the progress of the science and technology. For almost 100 years, progresses that have been made on regions like industry, energy, medicine and communication put great and immense effects on human society. High technology that improved the quality of human’s life is so evident that everything around people is the production of technology. Medical region, for example, is the most obvious and efficient case to illustrate this aspect. Since the antiseptic and anesthetic were introduced into the world, steps have never stopped to explore better ways to overcome human’ dreadful diseases. Up to know, scientist have solved many diseases that once thought to be fatal and pestilent, and the introduced highly technological medical apparatus, as for microsurgery, which can operate on blood vessels directly, have greatly improved human’s health and prolonged their lives.

Although technology has had made people’s life more proficient, we cannot deny that besides its positive effect, technology also has some negative side effects, some of which have made disastrous consequences. For example, people are striving for new energies to meet their increasingly desire, which has lead to the development of huge nuclear-power plants to replace oil-fueled generators. But as a consequence, they greatly and directly threaten human life. Events like the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear-power plant in 1979 and the disaster at he Chernobyl nuclear-plant in the Soviet Union in 1986 are examples to indicate that some technology cannot be controlled by human beings. Other examples like cloning technique creating ethical issues, high technology making accordingly high unemployment, and the overburden on environment caused by pollution, all these evidence seems to elucidate that technology does really do harm to human life.

After retrospection of the positive and negative aspects of the modern science and technology, we should have formed a clear recognition that technology is not dangerous to people because of the side effects, but that often there is a lag between the introductions of new technologies. Technology is an increasingly complex set of organizations and procedures, and it requires more effort and skill to make the lag narrower and narrower. Every new alternative’s appearance must experience a series of great difficulties to get mature, and this is the same case toward technology. In the case of The Three Mile Island nuclear-power plant in 1979, the leakage is not the only fault of technology itself, but a consequence of a combination of factors, such as equipment failures, ineffective safety precautions, inadequate training, and so on. So that if the methods were taken into consider ahead of time, the effects of the disaster would not be that much serious.

To sum up, since human being exists in this unknown world, their pursuing for novelty would never cease. Technology has helped people to recognize, realize, and utilize the world and this trend would never stop. It is true that technology has both positive and negative aspects towards human beings, so that it needs people to exert much more effort to make technology perfect enough to serve people and make the world more colorful.

Issue 76. “Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life.”

The 20-century witnesses a rapid progress of human world that owns much to the highly improved(用developed似乎更好) technology, which facilitates humans’ life and fulfills people’s curiosity to world and the universe. While at the same time, highly advanced technology and science also bring about some disastrous side effects, such as nuclear weapon and ethical problems. As a consequence(好象一般用result,不过没大问题), some claims that high technology creates more problems than it solves, and it may threaten or damage the quality of human life. Although it is true to some aspects, I still hold that technology can bring more benefits than damage(damage是名词吗?不用加s) if human beings are willing to put more efforts on how to overcome this barrier(障碍这个词不太合适). There are some reasons cited afterwards.

On the first page of the 20-century, human beings were hunger and eager to know what the world was really like, they were tired of animal powers to operate their world, and they were urgent(urgent不太合适,他一般是形容事情很紧急的) to find new methods to improve their health(这句中的许多方面并不是20世纪的特征,估计从封建社会就开始了,不过那时找不到合适的解决方法). The curiosity of recognizing the world and decision to liberate their manual power drove the progress of the science and technology. For almost 100 years, progresses that have been made on regions(regions一般是指地理上的区域,用field更好) like industry, energy, medicine and communication put great and immense(immense比great程度深,只留一个就好了) effects on human society. High technology that improved the quality of human’s life is so evident that everything around people(这里也有点绝对了,空气,阳光都在人们四周,他们也是科技的产物吗?) is the production of technology. Medical region, for example, is the most obvious and efficient case to illustrate this aspect. Since the antiseptic and anesthetic were introduced into the world, steps have never stopped to explore better ways to overcome human’ dreadful diseases. Up to know, scientist have solved many diseases that once thought to be fatal and pestilent, and the introduced highly technological medical apparatus, as for microsurgery(显微外科?), which(which 代替的好象是一门技术,后面直接接OPERATE感觉不好) can operate on blood vessels directly, have greatly improved human’s health and prolonged their lives.

Although technology has had made people’s life more proficient(熟练?这个词不妥当), we cannot deny that besides its positive effect, technology also has some negative(付面这个词多余,side effect本身似乎就有不好作用的意思) side effects, some of which have made disastrous consequences. For example, people are striving for new energies to meet their increasingly desire, which has lead to the development of huge nuclear-power plants to replace oil-fueled generators. But as a consequence, they greatly and directly threaten human life. Events like the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear-power plant in 1979 and the disaster at he Chernobyl nuclear-plant in the Soviet Union in 1986 are examples to indicate that some technology cannot be controlled(加个fully) by human beings. Other examples like cloning technique creating ethical issues, high technology making accordingly high unemployment, and the overburden on environment caused by pollution, all these evidence seems to elucidate that technology does really do harm to human life.

After retrospection(回顾?好象不够贴切,回顾一般是从时间上向后看,用个更一般的词更贴切) of the positive and negative aspects of the modern science and technology, we should have formed a clear recognition(这样就能推出结论了? that technology is not dangerous to people because of the side effects, but that often there is a lag between the introductions of new technologies.

It is true that technology has both positive and negative aspects towards(改成TO比较好) human beings, so that it needs people to exert much more effort to make technology perfect enough to serve people and make the world more colorful.
