Issue 185
"Scandals---whether in politics, academia, or other areas---can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
First of all, it is obvious that scandals are of the most eye-catching news today, and their power may even eclipse those of speakers and reformers. When browsing a newspaper or webpage, sometimes the most conspicuous head lines are about scandals. Moreover, one must have a deep impression about scandals from the historic ones like Watergate scandal , sex scandal of Bill Clinton to those happen in daily life while paying little attention to the new reform of the government recently. Two reasons come into my mind that could explain the phenomenon why people pay so much attention : one is that people are concerned with the function of society and want it to change for better as well as a curiosity of digging into those celebrities or politicians' personal affairs; the other reason is that when the mass media cover those scandals they are prone to magnify scandals in order to draw the attention from public or even cater to some low taste. Compared with the 'normal' acts of the speaker or reformers , 'paranormal' scandals and magnified coverage seemingly are the center of the public.
Conspicuous may scandals seem and a lot of attentions they may have drawn on problems in ways no speaker or reformer could, it doesn't equal that scandals could be helpful to society in any areas and at any time. It depends on the motives of onlookers and whether people could go further enough to realize the underlying malfunction as well as take some actions.
When it comes to politics, no matter corruptions, bribery, gerrymander, delinquency or anything else, the scandals undoubtedly will be flaring, but not always helpful. Consider, when two candidates for mayor scandalize each other for the past bad things, should the common people believe them all? If people 's eyes only fix on the blatant scandals they even forget to ask whether the scandals all are real, and only stay at the surface, no doubt what scandals bring is only a black side of the society and political system which definitely leads to lacking confidence of the constituency . However, if people are able to take one step further to contemplate on scandals as to discover the defects of the system thereafter propel the reform, scandals can be helpful. For instance, because of scandals one survey indicates that 80 percent of Japanese lose confidence on the present government. Nonetheless, if Japanese think it carefully on the causes of misconducts of the government officers instead of only complaining, they may discovery the reason lies in the malfunction of the government , to be exact, the too close relationship between the government and state-owned companies which makes the officer inclined to commit bribery. It is likely that some effective reforms accordingly carried out may help to bid the government to function more soundly.
However, as far as academia, I doubt whether scandals could bring more benefit than harm. Because scandals whether they are true or not will distract scholars from their research works and bring panic into academia which inevitably disorders the system. It is well-known that mass media would like to dig something out from those famous scholars which will make a sensation and a scholar usually only focus on studies with little attention to personal images. Just imagine, if the scandals have been prevailing among scholars, even someone who has nothing to do with such misconducts would act cautiously so as not to cause any suspects by medias and surely it is a waste of energy and time. Isn’t it better if those scholars dedicate their time and energy to their researches and make greater contribution to our society? Maybe some detractors may say that sandals would be help when there is a plagiary. But I would argue though sandals can bring those who plagiarize into light, shouldn’t we perfect our supervisory system which should carry out such functions instead of appealing to scandals in view of the disadvantage I discussed above? |
