Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is not necessary for university students to attend classes as long as they can pass their examinations.
Nowadays, a large number of students think that it is not necessary to attend classes if he can pass the final exams. What’s more, even some teachers hold the opinion that I can give an ‘A’ to students who don’t have my classes if he can get a high score in the exams. However, as a student who almost doesn’t play truant at any time, I am aware of the advantages of taking every class.
That we can save a lot of time to learn the knowledge in the class compared with learning by ourselves is the foremost advantage. Everyone knows that a skillful teacher is good at telling the students the most useful knowledge in one book. In contrast, as an inexperienced student, we may waste a lot of time in some useless knowledge. For example, when I studied the Math in college, I had spent a lot of time to do the homework and practice it. Nevertheless, my teacher told me that the only thing you should do is to remember the significant points in the book and you could do all questions. After having followed my teacher’s view, I found that the Math’s questions were all the same and easy to be solved.
The second advantage of taking a class is that you can learn more knowledge beyond the book. Almost every textbook only contains the knowledge that what the course is concerning about and what the conclusion is. Yet, if we read the book, we don’t know how these formulas come from and who create the formula. To take the Quantum Mechanics for example, when I took the book, it was difficult for me to know how Schrodinger found the formula, but when I had the class, my teacher told us that it came from a very accidental event.
Admittedly, almost all students know the two advantages above, but they think that they are busy at other works, such as attending competitions, social activities and so on, therefore it is better for them to cut the classes and only view the videos for the class. Maybe they don’t know the last advantage that I want to refer to them, which is communicating with the teachers. When you were in the class, you could exchange your ideas with teachers and other students. It was most likely that they could help you solve some problems you met in the competition or activities.
All in all, it is better for everyone to take the classes, the more you have, the more advantages you will find. And if you don’t take it, you may spend more time preparing your exams, do you think it is a cost-efficient decision?
