234 "Most people prefer restrictions and regulations to absolute freedom of choice, although they would probably deny such a preference."
---------
Human beings are amazingly self-contradicting in many aspects. A good case in point is that while ostensibly strongly claiming for high freedom of choice, one from the bottom of his or her heart actually prefers restrictions and regulations. Although it sounds paradoxical, reasonable explanations are still available if human's demand for free choice and for set decision are bridged by another key notion--responsibility.
When we choose at our own will, then we ought to take responsibility for the outcome of the choice, for better or worse. If we succeed, we are entitled to enjoy the benefit exclusively; if otherwise, we are unable to legitimately find anyone else to share our loss. When we choose whether to choose 不带这么用的吧~~~, we actually choose whether to embrace concomitant responsibility. This is what common sense inspires us and everyday life experiences keep reminding us.
No matter how equitable and reasonable this law of society is, nevertheless, 好久都没有用过把nevertheless跟however放在中间罗~~~学习ing~most people (who are living and presumably absorbed in their mediocre and even monotonous lives) still prefer to avoid choosing. We human beings usually employ negative attitudes towards responsibility, which amounts to obligations, tasks and even troubles. As an old saying goes, "don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you." This can perfectly illustrate the policy of life that we are very used to as well.
Behind the experiences in our day-to-day lives, it is our human nature that produces our aptitude and inclination to relinquish freedom in choice. Except a few adventurous and enterprising individuals, the majority of people are easily impressed by and therefore likely to exaggerate undesirable possible results, whether consciously or not. In this sense, we are innate pessimists. Hope is always indefensible under the attack of pessimism reinforced by available or even memorable stories about failures that suffer the results of their free choices all by themselves.
Moreover, disobedience to widely accepted regulations and restricts always invites isolation and sometimes hostility. We cannot live in daydreams and thus have to handle people around us, whether for or against us. Free choices seldom win others agreement, let alone appreciation and support. To choose might be an easy job while to succeed is quite another.
On the other hand, if we merely follow fixed restrictions and regulations after many others who have assured this way to be error-proof, we can anticipate a low but riskless return of our decisions. In other words, we pay our potential favorable results, which often come from freedom from routine and conservatism, for certainty and psychological peace. Even if having encountered failure, we can throw the blame onto the regulation.
To the few who dare to risk making their own decisions in spite of set frames, however, the preference of the other most for obedience is quite welcome. Under the regulations, most people all behave in identical and thus predictable manner. And hence, the bold ones can employ other common people in order to serve their ambitions. Moreover, ironically, it is those who break some old rules that in return establish new rules either by inspiring examples or by strict codes.
Freedom is like a kite; and restriction, accordingly, its string. Without the pull of restriction, freedom is bound to fall down. A democratic society demands both kinds of people: the ones who pursue freedom in choice and the others who prefer eventless lives. A citizen also enjoys his or her freedom within the range that his or her abilities and circumstances allow him or her. Nevertheless, we see most people holding their strings so firmly that their kites never fly high.狂喜欢这个结尾~
