98 "Colleges and universities should offer more courses on popular music, film, advertising, and television because contemporary culture has much greater relevance for students than do arts and literature of the past."
Which should colleges and universities set more courses on:contemporary culture or past culture ?The speaker favors the former for the reason that it is much more relevant for students than the latter. After all, it is contemporary culture that we live in and have many connections with. However, I disagree with this statement. The colleges and universities should not offer more courses on contemporary culture than past culture.
To begin with, contemporary culture benefits students less than the past culture due to its undeniable disadvantages. On the one hand, contemporary culture lacks stable viewpoints. For example , hundreds of pop songs are created every day and some of them become extremely poplular : these songs appear in the TV programs ,radio broadcast and lots of people learn to sing them.Just after a short period, however, most of these songs cannot be heard any more.On the other hand , products coming from third-class authers in contemporary culture possess little value for students to study. They may just be repeats of former thoughts or concerned about trivial aspects.
On the controry, past culture ,examined by the time ,brings out valuable and insightful thoughts. The classics offer powerful guidance and inspire us to solve the problems. In short , both being easy to change and ordinary thoughts limit the contemporary culture to help students more than past culture.
Furthermore, it is difficult and unnecessary to set formal courses on contemporary culture. As stated above ,contemporary culture is easy to change.A favorable thought today may become totally unnoticed tomorrow. What is more, contemporary culture involves all fields of society which are complicated and specific and may not have a definite conclusion yet.Therefor ,it will take great effort to offer formal courses. On the other hand, we all involve in the process of creating contemporary culture and have already felt it deeply in everyday lives. For example ,once there is a new film on the cinema , we will go to see it and then comment on the content .As a result, there is no need for students to study the contemporary culture in the classroom.
Admittedly, contemporary culture stays closely with everybody. We should keep close eyes on it with critical thinking and logical discussion ,however,no courses. For instance, a few years ago a song revealing a kind of social problem--the loneliness of the aged--encouraged people to pay a visit to their perents frequently. This song was paid much attention and aroused heated discussions on how to treat the aged in this modern society. However, these discussions were limited outside the classroom.Although students also got involved in the discussions , no one thought it proper to discuss this song in the classroom.
To sum up ,it is true contemporary culture do have much greater relevance for students than do past culture. However, we should give close attention to it instead of seting formal courses on it. |
