Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.
Tradition and modernization, which seem two contradict aspects, have from time to time played indispensable roles in the whole process of both individual and social development. The speaker asserts that tradition and modernization are so incompatible that one must choose one of them. However, as for me, his/her point of view is too absolute and radical to omit the significance of the combination of tradition and modernization, which has always benefit the process of the society and the development of humans.
On one hand, tradition is the symbol of a culture, which has been handed down from one generation to another, and can best embody the spirit of a people. Tradition standing for the public belief, social ideology, and living habit, etc., can be considered as a mirror of the society. What's more, by studying the traditional customs of a culture one can fully and thoroughly comprehend the essence of the culture. Take Japan for example. As long as the people hear the word of "kimono", the first image comes into mind is a pretty Japanese girl wearing beautiful kimono. Kimono, to some extent, has become one of the symbols for Japan in the international society. Another example cited often is turkey on Christmas Eve. Every family in western countries follows this tradition on Christmas Eve. Now turkey must have been a symbol of western culture in the eyes of the easterners.
On the other hand, modernization is the fruit of civilization and globalization, which makes traditions from different cultures mix together. It is known to all that contemporary society is like a melting pot, in which different cultures and traditions meet and crash each other. The gaps between various traditions, to some degree, are gradually melted by the trend of globalization. A case cited often is the success of McDonald. It was believed that in eastern countries, where people preferred Chinese food, the fast foods like chips and hamburgers could not occupy the market. However, on the contrary, the McDonald had the courage to challenge this tradition, and opened the first fast food restaurants in Asia. Now increasing Asian people tend to like eating fast foods not only because of its convenience, but also because it has created a modern life style.
On balance, tradition and modernization are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, it is totally possible to reconcile the two in order to serve the development of the civilization and the progress of the contemporary society. As the above mentioned, in order to win over the market, the Asian McDonald company has tried every effort to make the taste of the food fit for the Asians. They added some kinds of food that are exclusive in Asia, which are very popular with the Asian customers, for it not only remains the delicious taste of the fast foods, but also takes the inclinations of the Asian customers into consideration.
To sum up, tradition is the source and basis of the modernization, and meanwhile, modernization is the complement and improvement for the tradition. When faced the dilemma of tradition and modernization, we don't have to choose one of the two. On the contrary, it is totally possible for us to take the both into account, then combine both, finally find the perfect balance. |
