A: Intelligent Buildings on Web
The Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) College of Engineering invites applications from potential PhD Student in Architectural Engineering (Mechanical Engineering option) at the I-Modern Building Laboratory (IMBL).
We seek a highly motivated candidate who will be involved in the following research and
development areas: web application, web development, process control engineering, computer science and engineering, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering or other related engineering.
The end goal is to develop an online I-Modern building operating and diagnosing platform which will enable intelligent, high energy-efficiency, and green buildings.
The key words relating to the PhD are: web application, web development, energy system modeling, advanced control, building system integration, data processing and visualization, computational fluid dynamics, and automated fault detection.

Qualifications:
1. The successful candidate must hold a Master of Science degree in computer science or related web coding/development majors.
2. Being able to use web application tools (e.g. Java, JavaScript, Apache Tomcat, ASP) for
research is expected.
3. Being familiar with thermal, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics, HVAC systems, applied
mathematics and writing skills is a plus.
4. 1+ journal paper and 1+ conference paper are required.
5. Only students with excellent grades and demonstrated English language proficiency need apply.
6. The ideal candidate must have a minimum of B+ average and must have passed the TOEFL and GRE examinations.
Other duties:
1. The PhD student will be able to attend constructing a state-of-the-art lab in the area of building system automated continuous commissioning and integrated advanced control.
2. The PhD student will be an important link between our team and our industrial partners involved in research projects.

A: Automated Fault Detection and Diagnosis

The key words relating to the PhD are: HVAC, automated continuous commissioning, automated fault detection and diagnosis, integrated advanced control, wireless application technologies.
