I have been asked by the graduate studies committee chairman to get more information from you about how you will pay your tuition and living costs at the University of Colorado. We cannot give you any money, as I told you. In one of your emails to the secretary you told him that: 1) you can cover the costs of your first year; 2) that you believe you can get a scholarship from the Chinese government after your first year; and 3) that you will need admission with a tuition waiver in order to receive the scholarship from the Chinese government. It is number 3 that is a problem. Our department does not have money to offer students tuition waivers. It is unlikely that any other office at the university would be able to offer you that money, either. So my question is: can you pay the full cost associated with enrolling in graduate school at the*****? If you can do that for the first year, and then can get Chinese government money for the second year, it is quite possible that the Department of History will be able to provide you with some funding starting after you have completed your second year in our program. Please let me know.
I've consulted with my department and their advice is to wait until April. By then we will know if there might be some scholarship money that we can award you right away. I don't think it's very likely, but we should wait to find out.
One other possibility is that you wait to apply again next year, meaning that you would enroll in Fall 2015 instead. I have many reasons to believe that you will be far more competitive for a full funding package at that time. But for now let's wait until April
to see how things turn out for this year. We can discuss other options if they do not turn out well this year.
