Issue 191: Education should be equally devoted to enriching the personal lives of students and to training students to be productive workers.
教育应该平衡的一方面丰富学生的个人生活，一方面把学生培养成训练有素的工作者。

What is the aim of education? What should teachers hand down to students? In this issue, the auger suggests that education should help students to develop in both character and technology. I agree with the statement because there are only two things run through a person’s life, one is how to live, the other is how to work. Therefore, educators’ duty is to train students in the above two aspects, help them to develop in an all-round way.

On the one hand, many educators nowadays like to mention a phrase: quality education, which means that more and more attention has been paid to young man’s comprehensive culture. In fact, the primary purpose of education is to cultivate students’ minds, help them to grow up happily and become good citizens. As White said, “In education we are striving not to teach youth to make a living, but to make a life.” Another case in point is Einstein, the founder of “Theory of Relativity”, whom is not only a world famous physicist, but also an excellent violin player. Furthermore, youth is the future of our world, their moral level, their understanding of life can affect the whole society’s development. Thus, what the educators should teach the students is far beyond the texts, still including all kinds of humanities.

On the other hand, no one can live just on mettle requirement. The premise of enjoying personal life and contributing to society is living and the society also needs lots of productive workers. Hence, another purpose of education is to instruct students professional skills, which can help them to ameliorate their living condition and propel the society’s substance culture. Let us imagine the life 300 years ago, when there is no electricity, no modern vehicles, no multimedia, and so on, peoples have to use kerosene light in stead of electrical light, go to other places by carriage which may waste their several months on the road in stead of car, get news only around their houses and never know what another country should be. In that an era, how can they pursue their higher spirits demand? Say from this point, schools should also include occupational courses in the curriculum.

Accordingly, it seems simple for schools to solve the problem of how to culture students. But in fact many educators can not build a balance between these two aspects. We can often read such reports as a certain school obliged its students to take lessons after school in spite of parents’ objection, or some students put too much attention on extracurricular activities to catch up with their classmates, or even some graduates can not find job because they are lack of primary life and work skills, and so on. The situation modern teaching staffs facing with is still severe. Although they have known what to do, there is still a long way to the ultimate goal.

In conclusion, modern society need students not only can be skillful workers, but also have good comprehensive quality. This should be the ultimate aim of education.
