Many people maintain that a nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college, while others advocate that schools in different parts of the nation should be allowed to determine which academic courses to offer. In my opinion, I prefer a unified national curriculum supplimented with additional courses decided by different regions or schools on their own will.
On the one hand, it is necessary for a nation to require (require 不能这样用吧,set, employ, adopt) a unified national curriculum for two reasons. Firstly, a unified curriculum ensure the same knowledge basis for every student, thus facilitate the educating in university. For example, every university has prerequisite courses specially prepared for those students who have weak basis in certain field of knowledge due to the relatively weak education in their hometowns. These students are usually not taught with complete required subjects needed for the studying in university, and in order to continue their study in university, the university has to provide additional teachers and pay special attentions on them, which may be a waste of the education sources, considering these sources could be used on other facets.
Secondly, requiring unified courses would force all schools to promote their education quality, for they must provide a complete set of courses instead of part of them. In certain small schools, the teachers are not sufficient enough to provide a full range of courses. In this case, the schools might cancel some courses which is irresponsible for the students who should be taught well-rounded with various knowledge. If the nation requires a unified curriculum, those school mentioned above would try all their best to complete the courses, gradully the education level all over the nation would improve greatly.
However, an absolute unified curriculum is prosaic without being implemented with other contents according to the needs of different part of the country. A country consists of different cities each has its distinct feature and need. My hometown is a frontier city bordered with Korean, so it is natural for most people here to do business with Koreans, and thus Korean is frequently spoken. So many people eager to learn Korean, and the local school should meet the increasing need among citizens to provide Korean courses. Another example illustrating the necessity of implimenting courses with additional content is in history course. In our country, history is a required course in all high schools, although the main content is national history, every school is allowed to spend one-term courses on regional history, which is a good chance for the students to know about their hometown and the province. With such similar flexible implimentation to unified national curriculum, every part of the country can benefit a lot.
In sum, unifying the basic and important courses is necessary for not only the students' future study in university but also the chronic development of education level all over the nation, while, based on the unified coursed, some additional courses and contents can be added as well for the own benefit of every part of the country. |
