88. “Technologies not only influence but also actually determine social customs and ethics.”

Contemporary society is sometimes portrayed as dominated by the break-neck speed of  technological innovation. Throughout the world, the information and telecommunication technologies have brought about a new industrial revolution that is looked as importantly and radically as the industrial revolution happened precede it. In this everyday change society, a severe question whether technologies can influence and determine social customs and ethics has been put up. As far as I am concerned, I fervently believe that technologies can lay great influence on customs and ethics, which may be both positive and the negative.

From the positive point of view, we have to admit the great influence technologies have put on social customs and ethics. The customs as well as ethics have long been ruled and promulgated cause it has a restrictive effect on the whole society, not only can it limit the civilian’s behavior, at the meantime, but it can circumscribe the way the government functions, all the facts demonstrate one thing that the customs and ethics are both elemental components consisting an integrated society. The emergence of them can be   attributed to the function of society, so they are bound to develop and change as the development happens of the whole society. On the other hand, the development of the whole society is for no reason other than the development of new technologies. Taking all the possibilities into account, we need not to go very far to conclude that the technologies definitely have a great influence on the social customs as well as the ethics, only when the social customs and ethics develop and change gradually in accordance with the quick emergence of new technologies, can they function properly on the whole society.

As to the negative aspect are concerned, the day-to-day technological emergence is bound, in a certain sense, to bring about relevant negative impacts on the social customs and ethics. A good case in point is the achievement of HGP( Human Genome project). As early as the year of 1984, the HGP has been put up by a group of American scientists, now it have been more than 10 years when it comes into practice in 1990. Today, as the publicity of all genome sequence encoding human genetic information, and the establishment of all human gene bank on the INTERNET, the HGP could eventually claim its great triumph. But this is not the end, it has set a potential bomb in the world, any trivial concussion might detonate this bomb, this means that this achievement will bound to lay great impact on all aspects of our everyday life, especially on the social customs and ethics. New problems will certainly be brought up in the future, such as, Is the DNA sequence of individual a privacy for everybody? Are there any differentiate on the DNA quality between individuals? Will this bring negative effect on the individuals in their everyday life, i.e. marriage, job-searching and other aspects?  We can draw from this that the development of new technologies by no question would influence the customs and ethics in another way.

On balance, we should have an overall and thorough understanding of the impact technological changes have put on current customs and ethics. When the concrete role of technologies are concerned, we should neither emphasize the positive aspect too much nor can we neglect the negative influence. In other words, the proper attitude we should adopt is to combine the technological change with both customs and ethics when concerning the practical impact, and weigh the result with no discrimination.

To sum up, we should realize that the technologies nowadays, as a matter of fact, influence and determine the social customs as well as ethics in a large sense. Meantime, both its negative and positive effects should be taken into account here. In my opinion, an effective way out of this dilemma is to maximize the positive impact that the technologies had put on current social customs and ethics, and at the same time, minimize the negative influence that will bring about, by doing so, a healthy and sustainable developed society will be realize in the current days.
