Teachers were more appreciated and valued by the society in the past than they are now.
Thanks to the introduction of technology into social life, people have more accessibility to education facilities and resources. A rising controversy is debated for years that teachers are not respected and valued than they used to be. Admittedly, we’ve seen the impact of technology and increasing accessibility of education resource on the social status and reputation of teachers. However, we still must confess that with the rapid demand of innovation and creativity, teachers are still being respected and valued by students and society as in the past.
To begin with, one must acknowledge the fact that the importance of education is not just offering knowledge and information merely. Education is also served as a mean of informal social control over students to fit the society better and behave themselves according to the social norms. Thus, teachers are still playing a crucial role in regulating and guiding students. Especially, when student’s parents are absent for works or other stuffs. Imagining this, if a child is without proper control by other people, they are likely to waste their time strolling around and slack off. What’s more severe is that they are likely to commit delinquency since their parents are on work and necessary additional regulation is absent. Thus, teachers are up to fill the blank of education and regulation which make them still valued and necessary in this modern society.
Moreover, as the market is getting more and more knowledge and technology-intensive-oriented, parents and students are beginning to pay much more attention on the nurturing and cultivation of students’ intellectual development to ensure a competitive ability so that they are capable to survive in the future career. For instance, my sister always keeps an intimate contact with her son’s teachers to get information about his academic performance, his attitudes towards teachers, and his daily attendance conditions. It clearly indicates that teachers are acting as a bridge to parents and students’ education, a medium between school and home, and a school supervisor over students when parents are absent. The significance of teachers for students’ education is obvious and keeps them still worshiped and admired by the society as whole.
Furthermore, one irreplaceable importance of teachers is that they symbolize the possession of knowledge which illustrate the long-going saying “Knowledge is power”. Somehow, it is a historical merit that keeps teachers profession unique among other occupations. Teachers’ face-to-face communication is thus hard to be replaced by online-courses or video classes. In addition, with the increase of students’ enrollment resulted from the emphasis of education. Teachers with wisdom and knowledge still remain as competitive components among schools. Many schools are spending quite a budget to attract teachers and professors to take positions in their schools or simply give a lecture. The historical merit, together with the accentuation on education among the public, makes teachers’ social status remain relatively high and valued.
To sum up, even some students or people are devaluing the reputation of teachers, they are simply a small proportion of the whole picture. As I’ve stated above, teachers are still valued and appreciated by the public in general.
