A departmental unit at the University of Science and Technology
of China (USTC), the Special Class for the Gifted Young (SCGY)
is targeting for the most talented youngsters. Based on the suggestion
of Dr. Lee, Tsung-Dao, a Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, SCGY
was initiated in 1978 at USTC, one of the most prestigious Chinese
universities. Since its establishment, SCGY has attracted many
talented youngsters all over China.

There are currently two undergraduate programs in SCGY. The
first is for the students who are much younger compared with usual
college students. The entrance ages of them are all under 15.
Founded in 1985 and unofficially named as "00 Class", the second
program is targeting for the students with exceptional records in the
high school. Because SCGY provides one of the best educational
environments in China, admissions are extremely competitive.

Students in SCGY usually spend five years to get their Bachelor's
degrees. During the first two years, the emphasis in the education is
to equip them with solid foundation in mathematics, physics, foreign
languages, and computer programming. In the following three years,
a student can choose any field as his/her own major, as long as any
department in USTC can provide such a BS degree program. This
is unique in the current education system in China.

A strong characteristic of SCGY is that excellent students in
different majors have a good chance to study and to live together.
Since nowadays many new topics in science and technology have
strong interdisciplinary characteristics, such experiences would help
students to broaden their knowledge and vision.

Till now, SCGY has enrolled 22 grades of students, 14% of which
are females. After graduating from SCGY, 73.7% of them got master
or doctoral degree in China or abroad. Hundreds of them continue
their graduate study in the most famous universities in the world, such
as Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, etc. Many alumni
have made remarkable contributions in their own fields in science and
technology. Dr. Ya-Qin Zhang, the youngest IEEE fellow in history ,
Dr. Jiajie Zhang, the first Ph.D. on Cognition Science in the world ,
and Dr.Yongcong Chen, the youngest professor of USTC are good
examples. There are also many making achievements in industry,
press, commerce, and finance.

The talented students in SCGY are becoming the pride of their
professors, USTC, and China!
