(1)文艺复兴
Renaissance
The people who lived in Italy and northern Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were the first people to think of themselves as belonging to an era. It was the Renaissance, a period of renewed interest in learning after the Middle Ages.
The motto of the Renaissance was “A man can do all things if he wills,” and the man who fulfilled that motto more than any other was Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci excelled at portraiture, a new art form that depicted people as individuals. His painting of the Mona Lisa remains the most famous portrait ever done.
But Leonardo was also a skilled architect and engineer, who designed a submarine, helicopter and airplane, long before those inventions were ever built. Hundreds of drawings and thousands of pages in his notebooks attest to his interest in astronomy, anatomy, botany, geology, and above all mathematics He was interested in city planning and sanitation and was reportedly a talented musician.
Since the Renaissance, the term “Renaissance man” has been applied to others, who, like Leonardo da Vinci, excelled in many diverse fields. Thomas Jefferson is perhaps the best example. He, too, was a gifted musician and architect as well as botanist, philosopher, writer and third President of the United States.
(2)建筑:Taj Mahal泰姬陵
Taj Mahal
Considered one of the finest examples of Muslim architecture and one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal is also one of the most extravagant monuments ever built for love.
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughul Emperor Shah Jahan, in Agra, India, in the seventeenth century. Although Taj Mahal means “crown palace”, the great, white marble building was never used as a home. It was built as a mausoleum for the emperor’s second and favorite wife, Queen Mumtaz Mahal.
The queen died in 1631 while giving birth to her fourteenth child. Her grief-stricken husband was so heartbroken that it is said his hair turned gray overnight. He began construction of the Taj that same year. It was completed more than twenty years later.
Designed by the most renowned Islamic architect of his time, Isa Khan, from Shiraz in Iran, the Taj Mahal stands on a raised marble platform with a tall, white decorative minaret at each of its four corners. Its large central dome is flanked by four domed chambers, and the entire structure sits on the edge of an ornamental garden.
Twenty thousand people worked on the construction of the Taj Mahal, and expert craftsmen from throughout India, the Islamic world and Europe contributed to its decoration, creating beautiful patterns with inlaid stones set in the white marble of the building.
Today it is regarded by many as the most beautiful building in the world.

(3)巴洛克时期Baroque(追求复杂、精雕细琢的艺术效果)
In the late 16th century, European artists and architects became tired of what they saw as the restrained, static and too orderly art of the Renaissance. They were interested in expressing their feelings through more dramatic, ebullient forms and movement. The style — called Baroque — is one of the major developments in Western art.
The Baroque style of architecture began in Rome in 1568 with the design of the Jesuit mother church, II Gesu. Many artists, such as Italy’s Lorenzo Bernini, were masters of both Baroque architecture and sculpture.
In painting, the Baroque period reveled in the effects of light and shades as exemplified in the works of Holland’s Rembrandt, the Flemish painter Rubens and Spain’s Velazquez.
Baroque music is filled with complex details and contrasts. Opera, with its elaborate stage spectacles, first developed during this time. Baroque music began with the reforms of Claudio Monteverdi of Italy and culminated in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Friedrich Handel of German. The Baroque was one of the most productive periods in the arts, architecture and music. The finest works of the period were produced largely during the so-called “High Baroque” from 1600 to 1660. At the end of the 17th century, Baroque art developed into a more intimate and relaxed style called “Rococo”(洛可可). |
