ISSUE69 - "Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"
Should the government place restrictions on scientific research and development? It seems that the asserter thinks not. It may be likely to agree that the scientific research and development should be restricted for the reason that the atomic bombs and chemical weapon have brought the great lost to our human beings. In my point of view, I agree with what the speaker asserts about the attitude to the scientific research and development. Restriction on the science may seriously prevent the development of the science and what’s worse, it may kill the science.
Primarily, the limitation of the science may result in the fall-behind of the scientific development, the ignorance of the people and in turn the weakness of the nation. Easily, we can use the ancient China here to elaborate my comprehension of the limitation of the science. It is a wrong decision which tended to limit the progress of nature science and even to exclude it to pull the country that once was the boss of the world into the position that only could be beat by other countries. What’s more, the loss of the chance to acknowledge the nature regulation made the people blindly to adore the governor of the country and to give up their birthright that they should be treated equally. So, to keep the people outstanding and keep the nation strong, we should not set a barrier in front the science.
Furthermore, the scientific research and development may have an abnormal development with the interference of the government. Admittedly, the government has great impact on the science. So the science may have a prosperous advance in some field that government favors, as this field may help them strength their position in the country or they will benefit much from it, however, the science may be standstill in some field that the government excludes. For instance, the Soviet Union put all their energy to develop their heavy industry and national defense, thus the scientific development of the heavy industry and national defense had a great advance. Yet, there was nearly no advance in the development of other fields such as the social science and humanity.
It seems that the science do bring us some catastrophe in our human evolution. Many cases can be cited, the atomic bombs have destroyed the hometown of many Japanese and kill many innocence in World War 2; the clone technology brings about many humanity problem to our people and it may lead to a great chaos in earth. Yet, it is unreasonable and hasty to attribute the catastrophic result to the evolution of the science. The critical factor that decides the result of using the science development is the human themselves but not the science. It is the evil idea of the human being that kills the people in the blast of the atomic bomb and intends to use the cloning technology for some illegal purpose. So what we should do is not limit the progress of the scientific research, but to strength the humanity education and teach them to keep virtuous and kind-hearted.
In sum, I agree with the speaker that the government should place few restrictions on the scientific research and development. If we could stick to develop the scientific research, the people could access the truth and know about themselves and they would be able to make a contribution for the country too. What’s more, it may be inapt for the government to interfere the development of the science. Eventually, I think what we should pay attention is the moral education and humanity education of the people, so that they would not use the technology to satisfy themselves illegally.
