Issue 185
Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
The scandal, always regarded as having negative effect on a person, sometimes could induce more attention on ordinary people and generate related discussions about problems engendering the scandal, while the result is difficult to be produced by speakers or reformers. As for the function of scandals, I think it is a two-side sword which have both positive and negative to the whole society.
Scandals, whether in politics or academia realms, always focus more public attention on related problems and produce discussions in ways that speakers and reformers have difficulties to achieve. Although there is propaganda about the conduct of plagiarism should be condemned in many years, especially in China, most people do not really pay attention on it because they took this idea into account that it is a common sense that has no special value to be overemphasis. As a consequence, this problem has not really been recognized until recently when the scandal has been revealed by media that a famous professor of a top Chinese university plagiarized a foreign paper in order to attain his academic achievement. If there had not been this scandal, the field of academia, even the whole society, would not have impetus on reconsidering the style in academia, which concentrates on pursuing reputations and high social states, rather than doing researches. Another example in politics field is Nixon's Watergate scandal. After the exposure of this scandal, one result was president's abdication. Another outcome, regarding as an important effect on this scandal, was an intensive discussion about personal credit, which was seemed as a general accepted conduct by the speaker and reformer's propaganda, but not fully executed by the masses. Therefore, it is scandals that could induce more attention and rethinking on some social problems.
Although the scandal might not be considered as a positive effect on single individual, it sometimes has advantages to the whole society. Take scandals in political fields as an instance. Since the basic responsibility of politicians is to make more welfare and rapid economic development, their behaviors are important. If they abuse their own rights to snatch benefits for themselves, such as corruption, it would bring a loss for the whole society. As a result, the exposure of scandals about corruptions in time is an impetus to promote politician’s conducts more scrupulous and prevent misconducts. Similarly, in academic field, scandals also have some positive effects. The exposure of plagiarism will improve the academic style. The reveal of falsifying data will promote more precise behaviors in experiments. Hence, scandals always indicate some problems and promote the whole society to develop toward a more valuable way.
Admittedly, it is true that scandal, a two side-sword to both single individuals and the whole society, has negative effects. The scandal of Clinton is a good example to support this view. Although public forgave President Clinton in the end, since it was only a misconduct in his personal life, the investigation of the personal scandal wasted tax-payer a huge amount of money without contribution to the society or people. Therefore, scandals sometimes may negative to the society and people. However, if we can effective utilize the positive side of scandals while avoid the negative effects of them, scandals can be useful.
To sum up, it is important to people reconsider some existing but always being neglected problems through the exposure of scandals. People should also learn to tell positive effects from negative effects and make social progress through the reconsidering. (575 words)
