PhD Recruiting - Urban mobility

Urbanization is growing worldwide. More people have been or are moving to habitat in cities, leading to imbalanced consumption of energy, congested traffic network, and emissions to the environment. Transportation, as the backbone system of the society, needs to be transformed to adapt to the growth of smart cities in the future. It presents a challenging research questions and requires a naturally interdisciplinary skillset. My research team is inspired and suited to take some of challenges. Now I am recruiting one talented Ph.D. student to join my team and to take pride of what he or she will be doing to long impact our society. This new team member should be highly self-motivated and has strong integrity in conducting research. Here are some examples of research topics ongoing or of my interest to explore further.

•        Electrifying transportation network by deploying wireless charging resources on transportation network
•        Understanding and modeling travel behaviors of electric vehicle with inherent interactions with smart grid operations
•        Improving reliability and performance of sharing mobility for urban residents
•        Infrastructures system design for connected vehicles and its applications to improve traffic network efficiency and emissions
•        Urban logistics problems
       
All my research is data driven and makes use of operations research knowledge coupled with transportation network modeling and analysis. Ideal candidate should have solid background in mathematical programming, optimization, network modeling and analysis. The student is also desired to have experience and background in computer programming and data mining. Students in civil engineering, electrical engineering, and automation are encouraged to apply, but open to all other relevant disciplines. Specific research topic will be determined based on mutual interest and agreement. The student will be supported in the form of research assistant (RA), teaching assistant (TA) or hybrid RA/TA, contingent on availability of funding.

Clemson University is a top ranked public university (20th national public university and 62nd national university). It is well located in blue ridge foothill in South Carolina, about 2-hour driving from Atlanta. Clemson is a typical college town, quiet, scenic, safe and friendly.

Dr. Huang joined the faculty of civil engineering at Clemson in 2011, a UC Davis graduate. As of December 2014, he has graduated one Ph.D. student (now is a postdoctoral research associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory) and one master’s student (now is a civil engineer at Amec Foster Wheeler). His team currently has two other Ph.D. students.
