YES,NO,还是NOT GIVEN,该如何抉择?

Nick

关于the worldpath

True/False/Not given, Yes/No/Not given questions:
points to remember.

First, There is very little difference between these two types of questions. True /False / Not given questions are asking you if facts in the reading passage are true while Yes/No/Not given asks you if the passage agrees with the writer’s opinion. The techniques for answering both types are the same.

Second, it is important when transferring your answers to the answer sheet that you don’t confuse the two types. Make sure whether you need to write T/F/NG or Y/N/NG. Sounds simple but many of my students have made this mistake in the past.

Third, There is often confusion about what not given means. There are two ways a question can require a not given answer. First, if there is no information at all on the topic of the question and second, if the topic is mentioned in the text but there is not enough information to decide true or false/ yes or no. Here is an example:

You read in the question: “Girls outnumber boys in the class“   “Outnumber” means that group has more than the others. So it means there are more girls than boys in the class. Now, you will almost never find the same words in the text; the answer will be paraphrased. For example:

1.“There are more female than male students” means YES.

2.“Boys predominate in the class” means NO because predominate means outnumber so it’s not true since the question states that girls outnumber boys.

3.“There is an imbalance between the two genders in the class” is Not Given. Because it means one group is bigger than the other but does not say which one.

Finally, don’t forget, if you find a question too difficult, don’t spend too much time on it and don’t leave it blank. You can guess T/F/ Not Given, Y/N/Not Given, and you have a 33.3% chance of being right!
